Hi...new member, joined last month. I recently purchased a 1987 Salon with only 20K miles. The car has the stock rally 14" rims with white wall tires. I want to replace the white walls with white lettered tires and give the car a sportier look. Probably go with BFG's. I have researched the forum threads, regarding tire size, but did not find the answer I'm looking for. Question: what size are owners running with stock 14 rally rims? Factory size would be 205/70, but I'm looking for something to make the wheel wells at little fuller and the car sit a little higher. Thinking about a 215/70....slightly higher & wider than the 205/70. Or...should I just stick with the 205/70's..?? Looking for any comments, suggestions, advice. Attached is a picture of the car for reference. Thanks, Mike

I did a little looking around .. I know you said bigger as in wider and taller but BFG and Cooper, Firestone all make a 235/60-14 thats a bit wider and almost the same height so your speedo would still be correct ... :D

The widest you can go is a 245/60R14. I had them on my '87 for years.

The 235 would probably fit a little better without bulging as much as the 245's but I never had a problem with them.

215 70 Looks decent on a 14" wheel, nice amount of sidewall and helps fill the well.

wouldnt a 235-60-14 or a 245-60-14 be too big for the stock 6" wheel? i ran 225-60-14 BFG's all around on my 87 salon and it looked good, gave it a lower leaner look. its a short tire but has a wide foot print. just going by how mine wore id say i wouldnt go bigger than a 225 on it, unless it was a 7" rim then a 235 or 245 would fit pretty nice. id say go with the 215-70-14, they'll wear nice and wont be bulging, easy to get and are a good fit

thanks for all the responses. seems like the 215/70 is an ok/proper choice for a 6" wide rim. agree.....the 235 or 245 will probably have a "bulge".

If your going for a sportier look I would suggest a wider tire out back.

245's bulge but I don't think it looks that bad. It's about the only way to get a "muscular" look with the small factory rims.

This was my car back around 1996 when I just put the 245/60R14's on:

I had those Goodyears for at least 4 years or so and then had to go to BF Goodrich Radial T/A's when the Goodyear's were discontinued. :( I HATE radial T/A's! The Goodyears were a night and day better tire, both in performance and looks.

Picture with the T/A's:

And yes, "technically" the 245 tire isn't listed as fitting but they work just fine.

WOW your car looks great with those tires, i still cant believe you put them on a 6" rim! i've had radial t/a's on all my cars and loved them, but i you could argue that i dont know any better. now that i have 15's i wont really need to worry about that, im hell bent on 235's all around

I like the stance of that but I love my radial T/A's!
