I have a spare shifter, so I cut 2" off one, as I see that G-BodyParts sells them this way also. I wasn't sure after I cut it if I would like it. I re-installed the console tonight, I really like the shifter now. If you thought about doing this, or buying one, to me it's worth it.

Sorry, didn't take any pictures, I dis-assembled the shifter, chucked the shaft in a lathe, to part off the 2" and cut the groove for the staple, then put in Milling machine to mill the slot for the handle, cut 2" off the push rod and re-threaded it in the lathe also. I think G-BodyParts list they cut the original chrome shaft off and weld a stainless shaft on that is 2" shorter, then have it chromed.
