As the title says how does one go about removing or at least detensioning the torsion bars for the trunk lid?

Book says to use a vice-grips and long handled screwdriver. Prop trunk lid open so as not to fall on your head. Grab the shaft with the vice-grips and use the screwdriver to pry the adjustment end out of the grooves to readjust tension or remove.

Funny thing is older manuals say to use the special long handled tool with great leverage, yet the 83' book I have says screwdriver- go figure. I've done it- be carefull- lots of stored energy in those rods. My Firebirds had the rod welded to the body- not good. At least these are removable.
