there's no answer to the question "what's best?" but if you want to run fairly steep rear gears like a 3:73, and you want to have any kind of highway mileage then you will need overdrive and the 700R4 is a good choice. It's basically a TH350 with an extra gear for highway mileage.

Yeah it's a good street gear. It's an even better street gear for a 2004r. The best all around street gear for a 700 is 3.42.
At least in terms of the gear multiplication in 1st & for cruising in OD.

For street and strip a 700r4 with 3.73 gears would be the ideal setup IMO. Get a nice shift kit and you'll be having fun in no time! If your not relying on the gears as much as the torque of the engine to get you moving then you could go with 3.42s or even 3.08s (maybe). But keep that overdrive transmission! You will regret it otherwise

Look mainly for 85-88 Monte SS's. Thats where I got mine and they are less rare than alot of the other Gbodies that had them.

My rear end came from an 86' monte ss and has the auburn posi with 3.73 gears. Swapped out the stock ring and pinion for a set of Yukon 3.73's since the stock set chipped a tooth.

I have a 700r4 with a 2500 stall. The car hooks great and accelerates like a bat out-a-hell.
