On a cutlass? Currently I'm running a 275/60/15 on a 15x7" in the back, which should really be a 15x8". It rubs slighly only when there is a lot of weight in the back, you have to massage the fender lips a bit. That is about as big as I would go without doing a frame notch.

I ran 235/75/15 for a little while. fit no problem on stock suspension although not a wagon.(pictured).
Im guessing you want to go wider?
Ive also ran 275/60/15 on factory wheels and agree with Kwik Cuttys post about factory width rims.

On my Monte a 15" x 8" with 4" of backspace with a 275/60 had no fitment issues at all without a frame notch at that time I was at stock ride height.

235/70 seems fairly close to frame with my rallies

I was wondering maybe a 245/50ish or a 255/60ish

I run 86/87 regal T-type wheels on my wagon you can get a 255/60/15 in there no issues with plenty of room between the frame. Even a 275/50/15 fits. Your fitment is going to come down to the rim and the back spacing for the rim. With the correct combo you can run a larger then stock tire with no modifications or issues. Its finding the correct rim/backspace or customizing a set to work, for me the T-type wheels work, there cheap, light, and the back spacing is great for my needs.

I wasn't expected to be one-up'd... but, I am glad I was! That thing is awesome.
