I'm looking for someone who has done the 4-5 speed swap in the Monte Carlos, i have an 84 SS and i want to put a 4-speed in the car but i'm worried about my long legs and hitting the steering wheel when dumping the clutch or power shifting, so i want to know about the drivability, i'm running a 355 roller, aluminum heads all the goodies about 475 horse.

If your leg don't hit the wheel working the brake it wont when working the clutch.

Manual trans is the only way to go!

What do you want to know I have had 4, 5, and now a 6 speed.

I'm 6' and when I had my 4-speed GP my legs hitting the wheel was never an issue.
But my shifter linkage hitting the transmission tunnel, that was an issue.

How did you correct your linkage problem? I should probably try and sort all this out before hand lol

First off, I had an M-22 with a Hurst Super Street Shifter. The linkage was rubbing on the transmission tunnel. We noticed it at first, so we pulled the transmission back out, and went after the tunnel with a ball peen hammer. With the carpet back in place, you couldn't tell from the inside. But it still did it under hard acceleration (maybe some new mounts would have solved this too lol).

It's been a while so I can't remember exactly how it went. But one of the linkage arms was rubbing the tunnel so bad, that the gear wasn't totally disengaging. I didn't have the car long enough to fix it.

Just know this. You will have to do a little bit of test fitting to make sure everything lines up. But it is so worth it in the end. I'm thinking about converting my Malibu to a 4-speed down the road too.

Oh yeah, and for anyone doing the swap. I used pedals and linkage from a 70s Nova, and had no problem. And, I was able to keep my bench in the car.

You can buy all the G body manual trans parts from Mikes Montes, or Muscle cars only, the linkage, pedals, even the unique offset clutch fork everything but the sheet metal hump, they come up on ebay often also, I found everything on ebay
I am going to use on my 81 2 door lemans, I have done a malibu before everything just bolts right in no problem
good luck

those instructions are BS...the pedal set up from an f body does not work in a G body...the pedals sit too high and too close to the driver and the housing is not even close to the G body housing.
I just read that link and he says nothing about f-body pedals. In fact this is the first line of his pedal section.
Unfortunately, the easiest mechanical linkage parts to bolt in can only be found in 1978-1981 GM A body cars.
