Bonneville cowl hood. what are my options

Postby 82bonne on Fri Dec 23, 2011 4:04 pm

With my new engine in the bonneville, my hood won't close. I dont want to have to change my intake, or air cleaner because i wanted to put on a cowl hood anyway. But i'v searched high and low for a cowl hood. I dont think any company makes cowl hoods for bonneville, and i refuse to use a fiberglass cowl scoop. Do anybody have pics of a weld on hood scoop on the car, or is there any other G-body hood that will interchange with the bonneville? What are my options besides a fiberglass hood scoop.

most of the hood scoops on this site are the cheap universal design, I might just go with the weld on cowl, but i want to see pics, and know what they look like, or i might try a bolt on scoop. My options are very limited with the bonneville

I'd suggest bugging VFN. So far I've got them to make a flat fiberglass hood. I haven't got them to do a cowl yet. Maybe if more people were asking for it they would make it. Your hood is the same as a 78+ Lemans / Grand Am. See the thread below.

Do you know if the grand prix hood will fit. I see they make a cowl hood for 81-88 grand prix

It doesn't. That's why I've been bugging them. The "V" taper in the header panel and hood is different.

Joe,
My thought exactly. Why does everyone want to put a Chevy style cowl hood on Pontiacs and Oldsmobiles?
I think a shaker hood would be cool on that car...or something more Pontiac related.

It don't matter what it is. I need a hood for extra clearance, but I refuse to bond fiberglass to my steel hood. I just want something that looks good. I just never seen a bonneville with any kind of cowl hood or scoop

I doubt a shaker is going to give you any extra hood clearance, unless you use a silly little air filter.

Shaker with a "dude" scoop would be my choice.

I'm almost positive I will get some kind of scoop, as I don't want to change my intake or air cleaner. I only need about 3 or 4 inches of clearance

I always liked the Ford "teardrop" design. Back in the day they were on everything, it became like a generic scoop. I know I've seen it in steel, but that will take some looking I'm thinking.Image

Mark,
Those scoops were popular in it's day. They were cool on Mustangs and Fairlanes...but they occasionally turned up on other cars. I even remember seeing nimrods turn them the wrong way.

My buddy had a fiberglass "teardrop" hood on his 78 Malibu. Thats the only car I have seen one on besides an old Fairlane.
