ls 5.3 swap into my 85 el camino

Postby hamiltonbs on Sun Apr 08, 2012 8:52 pm

I was wanting to post some picks of my 5.3 swap into my el camino but can't figure out how to get them to show up on here. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I swapped in a ls 5.3 in a week into my elco. I kept the th350 but I pulled it out to match it all up. It was a budget job and I got it all done and running with the exaust and all the little stuff for $2300.00 . the engine is a 107k mile motor I got from my local junk yard for $375. If anybody wants to know about any problems or fitment stuff just ask and I will let you know how mine was.

I'd love to do an LS swap one day and I'm interested in the 5.3. How much power does it make? And what did you pull it out of?

here is the engine before I put it in, I switched to headers at the last minute and that was a good choice because the truck manifolds I don't think would have fit
el co 7.JPG
all the sending units on the ls are sealed with washers so I made adapters and tapped them to pipe thread to put in my stock sending units
el co 12.JPG
the 5.3 doesnt have threads or a hole where the dipstick bolts on so I drilled the bellhousing in the back and put a bolt thru it to bolt the tube to

I had to lengthen and lower the trans mount pad on the crossmember

the engine is out of a 01 suburban and I put a used ls1 cam out of a 03 vette. It feels real good power wise, it starts pulling real hard around 3000 RPM and keeps going. I saw in a car craft mag where they took a 5.3 and put that cam in it and on a dyno it made 340 hp. but I have only driving it for 2 days now.

Great car! What lower radiator hose did you use? No air conditioning?

We just started a "LSx swap database" in the swap department for listing various part #s and stuff that works.

Cool swap - great job.

Edelbrock wants you to use THEIR carburetor - which is why we have trouble with the Holleys clearing.

the radiator hoses are stock ones for a 01 suburban that I just trimmed off a bit. No air yet, I planned on making a bracket that goes where the belt tensioner is and use a R4 compressor for a 90 chevy pickup. the A/C hoses I plan to use are for a 85 cutlass with a 307 olds. we will see how they work.

the headers are patriots for swapping a ls1 into a s10. I found them on ebay. they worked great!

Very clean swap, I was looking at your pics in your profile earlier. With those iroc wheels, did you use just fronts or just rears or what? I always wondered because the fronts and rears have a different offset as a set.

I think my AC pump was a '91 Caprice, or Camaro I don't remember. The bracket was kinda tricky, but it's always fun making your own stuff
