I've found a 700R4 locally, and I'd like to rebuild it and swap it into my '86 Cutlass. It's a column shift car, will everything bolt up and work when I'm done? I plan on swapping for the rally gauge cluster later on.

I am doing a 700r4 swap into my 85 monte right now. Only thing I see as a problem is the cross member being different.

As for column shift, I am unsure. I am using a B&M shifter on the floor

Are you still using the 307? Does the 700r4 have the correct bellhousing bolt pattern? Was the car originally an overdrive car? You will have to get a different crossmember(or modify it) and have your driveshaft shortened.

Do you have 200r4 now if so just wondering why you want to swap. There is a grate debate over which is better the 700 or the 200 but most racers like the 200r4 better

x2 the later 700's are slightly more reliable stock, than the early 200-4r's but they are pretty even with the later 200's. and once they are modified the 200 actually has fewer problems. plus it has better overall gear ratios, and i believe it's lighter.
i've said before that the only real advantage to the 700 is that it's a direct swap for the 4l60E series which is a really good trans, especially the 4l65 and 4l70 models.(the 4LXX series also uses computer controls and as such can be programmed for exactly how you want it and you can install a true paddle shift system)

Don't forget the 200-4rs are BOP and Chevy compatable.
700s are chevy only.

the crossmembers a little different, you'll need to cut ur driveshaft about 3 inches, and with column shift we had to make a metal piece to shift down into the low gears cause they wouldnt reach, nothing to serious. 700s are reliable if built right

I had a th350 with a 355 in the car originally when I bought it.

Went over to a 406ci so I got the 700R4 with the deal for the motor (for free).

So, I just modified the crossmember that was being used for the th350 and I have to have the driveshaft cut about 2 inches.

Ill know more tomorrow about the driveshaft. I had to get a different tailshaft out of a cadillac since the trans was out of a built iroc
