You may get some varying answers on this, but I pretty much just make sure that there isn't one on top of another.

IIRC as you go up the piston, clock each ring 90* in the same direction (clockwise or counter-clock).

It really doesn't matter. The rings rotate as the engine operates, so they do not stay where you put them. Just make sure you don't have all the gaps lined up when you install your pistons.
