I think I read somewhere that all gbody rears were like 52.25" long from housing flange to housing flange. If thats accurate than that 9 inch is gonna shove the wheels out far!

The G body rears are 58” wheel mounting (axel) flange to flange.

The problem we sometimes run into is how people are measuring the width of different axels. The measurement that really matters is where the wheels mount to the axels or outer axel flange to outer axel flange (to get really accurate you can add 1/8” per side to cover the thickness the brake drum adds).

The measurement can be a PIA to measure accurately especially if your working alone. The trick I use is to vicegrip a piece of flat stock or angle iron about a foot long to the outside of the axel flanges and use those to measure off of.

If the Ford rear end is 60” axel flange to axel flange it should work with out too much of a problem (the 12 bolt A body rears some guys are using are 61” if memory serves correctly).

I'm installing a 67 Chevelle rear end which is 2.5" wider than the metric rear, the BS on the wheels I use is 4.5" and it will fit no problem even with disk in the rear which adds a bit more. JBrue is running a Chevelle 12 bolt that's 4.5" wider than the metric and here's how sweet his car looks...

I put rear ends together but you could never pay me enough to get in there to check the backlash...

"Which rearends can be swapped into the 78-83 G-Body
The stock 78-88 A/G body rearend housing (housing flange to housing flange) is 52.125". Here is a list of other common rearend dimensions:

Body Style Housing Width
64-67 Chevelle 54.250"
68-72 Chevelle 55.250"
67-69 Camaro 54.250"
62-67 Chevy II 52.125"
70-81 Camaro 55.375"
82-92 Camaro 55.750"
93-up Camaro 59.250"
68-76 Nova 54.250"
78-88 A/G Body 52.125"
Information from Chevy High Performance Magazine 3/2001
Below is a list of common Ford 9" housing widths. NOTE the widths listed below is for AXLE FLANGE TO AXLE FLANGE not housing flange like above!!!
Body Style Housing Width
64-71 Ford (full sized car) 61.0"
67-70 Mustang 59.0"
79-81 Lincoln Versallies 58.5"
79-81 Granada 58.5"

Obviously, some of those are not good swap candidates for a 78-88 A/G body. The 64-72 Chevelle is a good candidate because South Side Machine offers a kit to adapt these rearends to the 78-88 A/G body cars. You will have to use wheels with additional backspacing to compensate for the wider housing. "
