Putting early heads on this motor will not necessarily correct the crappy compression ratio you have as a result of the large dish pistons in the 1976 smog 455. The chamber volume of most factory and aftermarket heads (that you can find and buy for a reasonable price) is actually quite similar. Even if you put aftermarket aluminum heads like the Edelbrock and the Procomps on it with a large 77cc chamber you will still have a low CR . The block and crank are a good foundation for a build though. For a performance build, you will want to swap out the big dish pistons. In 76', HP was low relative to the engine size but torque was huge.

If it was a small block Olds (403 CID) you can bump the compression ratio up using early heads. Chamber volume varies from 1967 #4 casting (60 cc) to a 1976 403 - 4A casting (83cc)

IMO I wouldn't mess with swapping in new pistons unless you're doing a complete rebuild with proper machine work and all. Even a stock 76 455 with the proper tune, bolt-ons, and gears will be a fun ride unless you're one of those guys who needs a really fast car. If you're happy being in the 13's with lots of street loving torque, I wouldn't rip it apart ( though I would slap a new timing chain on it ).
