Sean's 78 Camaro Z28

Should we leave the wheels grey or paint them body color?

  • Leave grey

  • Paint blue to match the body car, the way the car was when new

I would go for the crusty you guys found than my crusty. Awesome work.
Agreed. The rust you guys have to deal with us unreal. The rust we have is from sitting around and staying wet.

Well, so with the metal work on the driver's side done we were feeling pretty good about the project, especially considering we'd never done this kind of work before. We moved on to the passenger side and started with restoring the red door I posted earlier. Dad and I found those doors in a pick-a-part on an 80 Camaro with a V-6 (Chevy). The driver was as nice as you could imagine, to have found it in the junk yard. A few small dings and that's it. The passenger had collision damage on the skin but the shell was really nice. Both of Sean's doors had collision damage and the shells had rot at the bottom from all the sitting. So we removed the skin from the new to us passenger door and started cleaning up the shell and getting it ready for primer. To be completely honest, this was the beginning of a period of time where I was at Dad's working on the Galaxie a lot and Sean was at home stripping the panels for his car. He did the lion's share of the stripping on the project and the credit for all that hard work goes to him. I mostly just sprayed everything after he did all the hard work. Here's a few pics of the process....

You can see on the last pic above that the edge is treated with weld through primer in anticipation of putting on the skin. The way I remember it the first skin showed up damaged and so we did some waiting for a replacement. In the mean time Sean was hard a work stripping and priming panels and getting them ready. We were somewhat overwhelmed with parts so we resorted to hanging several of the loose body panels up on the walls in the garage including both fenders, the nose, the core support, both inner fenders and the rear bumper....

Somewhere along in here there were just too many loose parts off of the car so my brother got a storage....

On to passenger rocker replacement. Familiar territory so I won't go into a ton of detail....
rocker welding and swing set 003.jpg

This gets us to the end of March of '11. In early April, we rolled into removal of the passenger quarter. It had rust and collision damage (yay)....

The cancer in the trunk drop off was not a surprise. The old flares that we found down in there were a surprise. Bye bye trunk dropoff....

Of course all the inner structure was cleaned up, epoxy primed, then undercoated, then weld through primer on the edges, which were taped up to keep them bare metal. Here's a pic of part of the process....

And here she is ready for the passenger quarter to go on. The trunk drop off was from a partial quarter that we cut off of a parts car with a sawsall and a generator. The car was real rusty and the roof had already been cut off of it. The trunk drop off was real nice though, so that's an OEM trunk drop off....

I'm putting this pic in just because I like it....

On into early may and the passenger quarter is going on. The inside of it had been stripped, epoxy primed, undercoated, the full treatment....

This is a good place to stop. I'm on my lunch and I need to get back to work. Stay tuned. I promise, the metal work is almost finished. Thanks for looking. Hope some of you enjoyed this.
