The baseplates are known to wear. Another issue on the better M4M 800 cfm carbs is the limited idle fuel. My Holley reman, which ran great for years and my 78 403 carb ran awful on my 9.5 to 1 Olds 350 with the small 204/214 cam. Crappy idle, just stumbled and ran shitty. I could have modified the idle tubes but instead I sent it to Everyday Performance about a year or so ago. It was around $250 for a custom tune using my core and no plating but did do the rear bushings, the front were OK. It ran so much better, no more idle screws 5 turns out. The idle was a touch rich, better than ridiculously lean. Since I changed the combo to 9 to 1 with more intake duration, it runs even better. I did make the APT adjustable on this carb, a thread in plug and notched the adjustment for a small flat screwdriver. I believe it is one full turn from where Ken set it, I gained at the track by setting it richer, it kills fuel mileage that is for sure. An easy adjustment, I may set it back again today. Just clean the hell out of it, did you get a new float? Sometimes you can get away with the old one, sometimes not so much.

Yours might be in decent shape then, just needs a freshen up. 25 years? Damn that's 6 longer than I've been breathing oxygen and unburned hydrocarbons.
Yea I worked on G-BODYS when they were new lol I come from a car family it's all dyed off now but it was a good childhood I did my first overall paint job at like 12 I'm 44 now

My girls were actually very quiet till they were with their cousins or friends, then scream fest! Now they just hide and do their own thing, teenagers. The later carb used a smaller float and I got away many times not replacing them but everything wasn't ethanol fuel back then.

I figured I'd check the play before I go to crazy with it my parts car only has 60 on the clock so it's probably not worn out just very dirty and crusty I'll throw a kit at it and if it doesn't cure it's allments I'll mail it to someone who knows what there doing lol I think I'll be ok tho years ago I did about 2 a week let's see what I forgot in 25 years

Thanks and yea I'm so close to driving it I can taste it
As far as rust the car was in a dirt floor barn from 1986 when it got wrecked and taken off the road it was given to a scrap man that smashed the column and trunk lock and filler around the plate. My frnd Jose saved it from him to use as a parts car but it was way to nice for that so I made a deal with him and saved the car for my mother. At some point when it was in my yard last winter someone smashed the passenger side window and the town was up my but about the car so I made a huge mistake and covered it with a harbor freight tarp. Bad call on my part the tarp lit it sweat it dose have a rust spot on the drivers floor were the E-brake rubbed it and a hole in the quarter bottom were it was butchered together but none of the rust you mentioned was there before the tarp went on it! Most of it wipes off it's like sweat stains I figured once it's running and driving I'll start at one end and work to the other cleaning treating and painting I don't even know what that quarter looks like under that gray primer I may just cut it off and replace it I'm just not there yet
Oh yeah the top plate for the radiator was in the bed of my truck sence the motor came out lol it got a little beat up

Well my very long day is about over first thing this morning I hit tractor supply for lead connectors then we did Lauren's b-day seafood dinner and a boat ride followed up with ice cream I guess the salt air got to her and she fell asleep on the couch. I took that opportunity to get the carberetor apart ....wow it's ugly and dose not fit in my carb dip can??? I'm soaking all the small parts in the can tonight and I'll find something bigger with a lid to soak the main body, top, and bottom in tomorrow for now I'm just thinking rest for work tomorrow

Got back to cleaning the carb tonight. Yuck!
That's the worst q-jet i ever had apart I guess it's ethanol poisoning. Rust and corrosion I had to soak it just to get the Jets out the rods and tubes are green it's horrible but the bace plate it tight. I'll keep working at it hopefully it will be a carberetor by Saturday morning when I do the registration and trailer it home a friend of mine invited us to a BBQ pool party Saturday a few blocks away and I would love to drive it there
