We've been working on Pontiac 2+2 for the last year, ever since my son and I drove my '86 T-type 770 miles up to Nebraska over Labor day weekend and drove the 2+2 back to Texas.

My son Wil just turned 18, so he is finally eligible to co-drive with me at the Sandhills Open Road Challenge. The rules state Rookies need to run in the 100 Mph class their first year, so it should be pretty easy and we shouldn't break anything. Next year we can run the 110 mph class, and I'll let him run North @115 mph, but this year is all about learning.

1.) I've redone/cleaned up the rats nest electrical wiring, and added a new LED stopwatch that should show up nice on video.
2.) Cleaned and Rebuilt the Howe upper ball joints,
3.) Had the steering box rebuilt and rebuilt the flaming river steering shaft,
4.) Added Thompson Power Blast Plates and tuned the carb to get rid of the off idle bog.
5.) Rewired the Power Windows using an LMC Truck relay harness

Then we did a Track day with my 17 Year old Son at the wheel:

Which demonstrated the need to fix additional stuff:

6.) The welded Ultra flow Mufflers were blown out and blown up, so those got replaced with new.

7.) And the Headers were flattened from years of landing on them, so I Welded new patches on one tube,

Then repaired the other tube with a strap design for extra security:

Then added Skid plates with crush zones under the pipes:

With the exhaust all back on Dad took the car to the Pontiac Owners National Meet at TMC and put a couple hundred miles on it, so I loaded it into the trailer for the Trip to Nebraska.

After Getting Teched on Tuedays we'll Run the courses on Tuesday and Wednesday at legal speeds to to familiarize my son with the course and the Rally Computer.

Thursday is the first race: the Loup 2 Loup. About 24 miles and we'll average 100 mph while not going over 130 mph. Two years ago a '70 Mercury NASCAR Replica crashed at the Loup 2 Loup and it looked like a plane crash:

After:

The Debris field was nearly 500 feet from where the car flew off the road. The Car did 146mph in the standing mile (Hellcats do 144) so he could have easily been going 130 mph when he got a wheel off.

Friday is the 1/2 Mile Shootout. My son will be driving my 5.0 Mustang and will be trying to beat my 130.1 mph record, which is still the fastest Stock 5.0L in the 1/2 mile at the SORC (even Faster than 4 Boss 302's and only .4 mph slower than a '16 GT350 520HP 5.2L) The SORC is at 2,500ft altitude so NA speeds a little slower than Sea Level events.

Saturday is the SORC. 56 miles averaging 100 mph. My son will drive the 29 miles north leg, I'll drive the slightly more challenging 27 miles south leg. My dad and I have won the 115 mph class 5 times, so the driving part shouldn't be that hard. The stopwatch work will make us or break us.

We are camping at the state park so internet may be spotty, but we'll try to do daily updates.

Sounds like a blast! I'm looking forward to some more G-Body racing footage! It still amazes me, with the right parts and setup, these cars can keep up with modern more performance oriented vehicles.
Thanks for the update!

I headed out to Nebraska from Texas Yesterday. Made it 7 miles before I noticed white smoke pouring out of the trailers fenderwells.

Pulled to the shoulder when both right side trailer tires turned to clown collars. Tires had 11 total miles on them. My dad was in town last month was worried my trailer tires were old and put new load range E tires at discount tire while I was at work.

My trailer was built in '94 when bias ply tires were still available. Radial tires back then had thinner sections. This was my 5th set of tires on the trailer - same size 225/75, but this new set apparently had an inch wider section and a thick scuff bar on the sidewall... so there was interference fit between the tires and the trailer.

Good thing I didn't set the trailer on fire.

Discount Tire was super nice about it and upgraded me to thinner section goodyears for $72 Total (the goodyears were $40/tire more). 4 hours after I left, I was back on the road headed north and 11 hours later I'm in Nebraska.

My son starts the University of Nebraska in a couple weeks and he drove my 5.0L Mustang up. We've been chasing a noise in the driveline. Had a rear end expert tear down the rear end - Looked perfect. Swapped the crap 2 pieces driveshaft with a Ford Motorsport 1 piece. The noise is still there, so its probably the Chinese transmission. When I get back to Texas I'll see what ford says about it.

The one piece driveshaft was $700 dollars, absolutely stupid money, but it completely transforms the car. We'll see if my son car beat my speed in the 1/2 mile, but the drive shaft they put in last week just might let him do it. If I had known the 1 piece drive shaft would have made the car drive so good, I would have changed it out when the car was new.

Ford was so stupid putting 2 piece driveshafts in their S197 Mustangs. The one piece completely eliminates the low speed bucking, the clunking, the shuddering and lets the motor rev. I read the reviews and I'm like "sure. they are just trying to justify spending $700 on a driveshaft", but I can say it is was worth $700 and I should have spent the $700 4 years ago.

We put larger wheels and tires and big brakes on the car since I ran 130 in the 1/2 mile, but I think the driveshaft might be enough to overcome these drags.

Welcome (back) to Nebraska! Glad you caught the trailer situation in time.

The University of Nebraska is a good school and there's lots of opportunities to get involved around campus both socially and academically (I should know I've only been here for 7 years). Which campus is he at (Lincoln, Omaha, Kearney) and what is he planning on studying?

He is at UNL living in Abel studying mechanical engineering and already has a huge group of friends he's met online. His hobby is turntable scratch DJing, so I'm sure he'll have no issue meeting people, since he was king of the dance party in high school.

My dad graduated from UNL with civil engineering degree in '62 and my sister graduated from there in '85 and my nephew played baseball for UNL and is currently a coaching assistant while he's getting his masters. Another nephews and niece just graduated from there and lots of cousins/second cousins will be going to school with him. My great grandfather moved to Nebraska in 1854 after emigrating from Germany in 1852, so I'm a native Nebraskan.

Oh cool. He'll definitely fit right in and sounds like he'll be the life of the party. Since it seems likes he's interested in cars, the Formula SAE(designing and building a mini formula one style car) and Baja SAE(designing and building a mini off- road buggy) teams are a few years old and are always looking for new members. I bet he'll find his way there on his own though.

Your family really does have a history here. My dad's family is from Auburn, Nebraska and I have all sorts of cousins who have graduated from the university. Its definitely a good place to raise a family and a pretty awesome college town.
