442Fleming - my thoughts exactly.

My son and about 10 of his freinds attended. Everyone they ran into at hotels, restaurants, etc, was happy to have them there. The cops handed out oodles of tickets (revenue) and they were good to the drivers and enjoyed themselves. The big incident was a local drug dealer that the cops cornered and he attempted to run over one of them - it's mentioned in the article that the local drug dealing genius was caught while attempting to OUTSWIM the police in the ocean :)

But after reading that article, one would be lead to believe that there was death and mayhem non-stop. These people, local government officals, are talking about pulling a Chris Christie and limiting access to emergency vehicles - wtf. I told my son and his friends that they should try to get the H20i group to have there show in our town, involve the local dragstrip, police and community and make the most of it. And if they won't go for it, then next year I'll go with him and haul the extra tires for the burnouts.

Hard to imagine isn't it. More than 10,000 youngish people and virtually no arrests, but yet the local government wants them banned/strickened.

I actually read a blog that popped up on my facebook feed on this very Malibu.... guy even had a video posted with the cops around it@ the gas station... turns out the guy claims that he had just pulled it off the trailer before getting on the main road to go to the station, and the cops impounded his car for "mechanical violations".... guess the blogger didn't see (and the owner remember) the wheels on the car spinning all the way down the street....

That's not the point. The crowd loves burnouts, unless you're driving (Or lack thereof) a crowd eating Mustang. I remember a crowd so thick you couldn't move down both sides of the street AND the median. Back then, "the King" had a red Chevy II with a tag that read SHOMED$. They brought a firetruck in to wash the rubber off the road! Then, came the bicycle and foot cops. The event is a shadow of its former self, people are still bitching.
I'll just go to Wildwood, NJ for the Race of Gentlemen. I bet they'd appreciate a burnout from a 60's muscle car.

didn't mean to make it sound like I was on the city's side on this, just thought it was funny how the owner had a memory lapse when the blogger interviewed him....

on the flip side though, I can see just the safety side of this... how may burnout "fail" videos have we all watched, where some a$$hat starts doing a burnout, then loses it into a crowd, or traffic just trying to get by? I like watching cool cars doing burnouts, but some moron who can't control his car and hits me/my family/my car will get a beating that make Dom Torreto look like a 90lb weakling....

I agree with you about the safety factor. That's why it would seem that the local government would welcome these guys via offering organized events. But instead they forced the cancellation of the H20i car show from the largest parking lot on the strip and closed all of the open lots to force all of the cars onto the street. It is truly a hypocritical situation - they don't want the cars on the street, but won't allow them anywhere to park.

Fleming has the correct attitude about this - it probably would be best to just go somewhere that they would be welcomed, and then boycott the OC beaches year round.

Actually, I only go to OC for the rod run. My folks live in Chincoteague; I go there for the beach.

I don't want to come across as some kind of nazi on this, I only agree with the city on the safety side of this. Any city council worth their salt would see the potential income of revenue for their city, and would do whatever they could to keep the $$$ flowing in... I'd boycott it if I had anything to go there with in the first place....
