Sorry if I missed it but do you by chance have a subtle burgundy stripe planned? Black or none would both be good too but I’ve always been drawn to drawing the two together. Key word being subtle. Starts getting Starsky and Hutch like . . . not so much.

Well, it turned out to be kind of a whirlwind weekend!

With the girlfriend’s assistance, in two days time I have completely blown apart and dismantled the interior down to a bare shell, cleaned and reassembled everything, installed some new interior parts, and put almost the whole jigsaw puzzle back together again!

I’ll probably throw some pics up of the headway we made later today, but for right now I’m way behind on addressing some of your comments and questions, so here goes...

Man o man, that car is gonna look soooo good when finished!!! Along with the others, I can't wait to see the finished product!!! Classy, with some attitude!

Thank you Scott.
I’m really hoping it will too, and be worth all the effort it’s been to bring it back from the edge of extinction like it was. Although it may be difficult for some to picture the finished product with the second color, I think when it’s all said and done it’ll just “work”.
:)

Either way, looks great! Flawless curves too, for someone who hates masking you do a fine job sir!

Thanks Duke!
Other than setting up the top corners of the “A” pillars for the soft edge masking, following that curve absolutely perfectly was the hardest part. It took several tries per side to get it just right, so it makes me happy to see that the effort was noticed and appreciated!

you already had me on the line, now you've sunk the hook even deeper!

the blackout treatment will look killer, and am looking forward to seeing more of the color scheme piece together! (I can kinda see where it's going, but still intrigued and curious!)

glad your standards haven't slipped any in trying to get it roadworthy! keep it up!

Thanks Darin!
I’m a little bit torn on what to divulge as far as details on the paint scheme. I think at this point it’s fairly obvious that I’m gonna two tone it.
On the one hand, I feel I owe it to you, my G body friends and faithful readers, to keep you in the loop and know exactly what I have planned, but on the other I don’t quite wanna give away too much just yet. I think a little bit of mystery and “what in the hell is he DOING” might not be a bad thing!

Still undecided on that one...

Getting impatient Donovan, looking good!

Thank you Jim. Sorry for making you impatient, but these things all take a ton of time. You of all people especially know that!
Thanks for checking out the progress.

Wow ... just wow... no words D. I love it. I may steal this idea

Thanks Mike!
I obviously hold no rights whatsoever to anything you see on here, so by all means, steal away! I’m pretty sure you’re far enough away in New York that no one is ever gonna notice if we both have the same modifications!
I’m flattered at the implication either way.
:)

Garth, I do indeed plan on incorporating a stripe to separate the two colors. A properly done two tone doesn’t look right (to me anyways) without it. It’s going to be a lot more “pin” and a lot less “stripe” if you get my meaning. I will be incorporating the claret interior color as the separation between the white and grey, it will be a traditional double stripe, thin and subtle just like OEM.

Here are two up close pics of the original two tone paint scheme from that 1980 442 that was in my wreckers last year:

While it’s actually a stick-on decal, the silver pinstripe that separates the black from the gold on the 442 above will be represented by a claret ‘stripe on mine. However mine will be actually painted on and buried under the clear.
This will serve to bring the interior color to the exterior, introduce a subtle third contrasting color, and tie the whole package together.
Hopefully anyways!
;)

Thanks for all your great questions and comments guys! As always I really appreciate and look forward to them.

D.

Thanks Jeff.
I encourage anyone to comment at any time, it’s always nice to hear from members that don’t normally say much. Thanks for following along on the thread and the compliments.

Well gents, it was another great day.

After reinstalling the center console from the weekend’s mad cleaning session, I warmed the car up and took it for a short run around the block and returned home. I checked the torque on the wheels and double checked tire pressures. Bumped the idle down just a touch and hit the road!

Yeah, it’s missing trim, the quarter glass windows and the back seat blah blah blah, but I didn’t care. It was a beautiful long weekend and day off here today, and I was gonna be damned if I was going to miss out on it!

After cruising around for a bit and making sure everything was operating correctly, I hit up my favourite car wash and VERY CAREFULLY gave it her first bath in over a year. I was mostly interested in getting rid of the dust and crud that had accumulated under the hood and in a few other places.

I think it cleaned up pretty well.

Also, here’s the interior now that it’s been cleaned and mostly reinstalled. It still needs some attention to detail and some protectant on all the surfaces, but it’s already looking 100% better.

These are the better condition lower door panels I got from a local G body guy a few weeks ago: I’m very pleased with the condition of them.

And of course a couple gratuitous exterior shots just because I could. Hey, it was finally clean!!

In this one you can start to get a sense of the pillar-less look:

After loading up my phone with these Cutlass pictures, I hit the streets again, did some cruising, some WOT pulls, and just generally had fun. Stopped for a bite to eat, and even got a couple of “cool car man!”’s.
It felt great.

That’s all for now.
