update and recommendation request.

ok gents.

so I have some decisions to make and thought I might ask the experts. They didnt answer, so I came here (just kidding!!! :D) you guys are the experts, the best, the most knowledgeable... (is it working?)

sorry i wont quit my day job...

anywho:

We will be pulling the valve covers to check on the noise which seems to have increased with time, and the Marvel oil didnt do anything to help.
if you havent already read, the manifolds are also cracked and leaking.

my question is: how much should I invest in this 307. if its just a lifter I assume I will change them all so theres that expense, But I am not sure what else could be wrong in the lower end of the block. it was running good before this noise started. i plan on doing a compression check after i get back from Vaca.

i need to get headers or manifolds and a full exhaust as well
what point should i walk away and look to pull the engine in your opinion?
maybe its a simple fix and I am overthinking it as I tend to do, or maybe i will be wasting money? I dont know.

i found a guy in Miami who started an LS swap on his cutlass and gave up, he is selling the car, but more importantly is selling an Olds 350, with the TH350 transmission for $600.00
i imagine they would all need a full rebuild though (he SAYS it was running before he pulled it for the LS, but who knows.) so that could get pricey.

i am leaning towards fixing the 307 for now, and saving up for something like above, 350/TH350 and rebuilding or getting a crate (i dont want to do an LS swap or anything, i like the old school stuff)

any input would be appreciated.
thx

As Tex said it's probaly the valve bridge pivots - I'd bet money on it.
fingers crossed.

while I am on Vaca my dad is stopping by to take care of my chickens, and he said he is going to pull the valve cover and take a look I will tell him to check it out.

thanks again.

I'd jump on that..... or, ask if he'll sell the engine only.

Have you decided to stay with a SBO? It sounds to me that you have. If you have, then if it were me, I would move to address the exhaust leaks first, whether by coming up with a good set of manifolds or going with headers. You really need the exhaust to be as quiet as possible/practical to help you diagnose any internal engine ticking sounds since an exhaust leak is usually a ticking sound. I'm wondering since the ticking sound has gotten worse, if what is bothering you is an exhaust leak. I'm not there, so I may be way off here. There's no harm in pulling the valve covers to look for a loose rocker, but in my mind you need to quiet down the exhaust to really know what you have. If you do find that you have a loose rocker from a worn rocker bridge, for the money, I would suggest replacing all 8 bridges and all 16 rockers and rocker nuts. It won't be expensive and you shouldn't have to get back in there and fool with it for the rest of time you have the car. Good luck with it, enjoy your vacation and let us know how it goes. Hope this helps.

Best,

Jared

Hey guys. So i dropped the project for a while to enjoy some weekends then started a big renovation job on the side with my dad. (We were GC’s in NY). Its still ongoing so i am messing with the car little by little

Some updates.

My dad found a tie wrap around the pushrod and spring. Like someone at some point actualy tied it. That was the source of the noise. It had dislodged and moved itself up. I dont know how we missed it. So my dad said it stopped making that noise after

New plan is install these new thorton 350 jr manifolds and get exhaust finished

Flush motor remove drain plugs and all hoses to clean out all the gook in there best i can

Bought new ac delco pkugs gapped to .60 instead of .80. We will see how that works out

Check the timing again to make sure its right

Compression check results were 145 on 6 of 8 cylinders and 135 and 140 on other two

Thanks! Agreed. I feel eager to work on it again as oppossed to rushed and frustrated. Look forward to getting it done.
