So I broke a rocker arm stud off in the head. Its the press in style stud, but my question is how far into the head does the stud go?
Ive been told there is about 2 eays of removing it, drilling it out and cleaning up the hole for the new stud or welding a nut on it and trying to pry it out. If I go the drilling option id like to know how deep I can go before drilling into the head itself.

Is this engine out of the car?

nope, I was adjusting the carb when I heard it pop then rattle. I immediately shut the car off, found the rocker arm, nut and broken stud laying in the head.

The problem I would have is wanting to know why one broke and what if more break, typically the only problem with press in studs is them pulling out but not breaking and you can pin press in studs to keep them from pulling out.
I think you might have some other issue causing this.

As far as removing it if there is enough stud to weld a nut on I would try that first and throw a welding blanket or two to cover everything.
Drilling can be done also but it is hard to control where the shavings end up but if you went this route I would drill it and then use an Easy Out to get it out.
I have never used pressed in studs so I am not sure if it is even possible to press one in with the engine installed but I would use a Loctite retaining compound when you do.

its possible that the rocker arm was loose during the time my father had it, from the looks of the rocker arm and stud piece I found it looks like it wore into the shaft and weakened it causing it to break. after I get this broken one out ill go farther into the head or engine and see if anything else looks funny.

Are they roller rockers or stamped steel?
