Hello folks, Terry from newzealand here, newby to GBF and must say some great info to be had . six months ago a purchased a 83 elcamino ss out of northern CA and had it shipped to nz. The car is 100% oridginal with 78,000 mls but has been sitting for sometime as all the clearcoat is wind blasted off. apart from the obvious patina look to bonnet it is 99% rust free, im rapped.
i want to make it into a daily driver so have cleaned and painted the chassie, replaced all suspention joints front and back and have started on the interior.
mechanicaly ive taken off the smog pump and replaced the exhuast with Hedman headers with dual pipes. one question i have is what do you do with the vacum lines and co2 sencor wire (from the smog pump)
i dare say i will have a few more Qs before im done - cheers for now, T ( photos is of how i bought the car)

What made you choose an El Camino over a UTE from Aussie land?

Mate, every man and his dog has a ford falcon or holden ute, ive had 2 falcons ,the new ones are rubbish (6 cyl) and holdens have a hard ride, plus its not classic american with style-that back window, classic.

Doesn`t sound like much of a choice of the locally produced cars, Where as the El Camino you could even go big block if you so choose.

depends, the question is a little vague. are you keeping the CCC carb and computer or converting to vacuum advance distributor? if the Elkie was still in the states, we'd advise you to retain the parts in case you ever sold it on to someone who might need them.

I would go with an 1979 and earlier .and or aftermarket carb and distributor .And then you can just plug off and or bypass them. My 1981 El Camino SS. Has a 290 HP 350 with a 1979 HEI distributor and a 600 Eldelbrock carb. FlowTech "shorty" headers.true 2 1/4 exhaust with Flowmaster 3 chamber mufflers dumping behind the rear wheels. Yet i still past emissions when it was required..

Welcome aboard Terry.
Looks like a good solid, dry project. I also wondered why you didn't go with a Holden Ute, but you pretty much explained it.
Keep us up to date on your progress. Nice to see more members from the other side of the world.
