Hello everyone I recently just purchased a 86 monte carlo LS not going to be a race car but hoping for at least 450 hp for a fun street car. And I came across a 73 2 bolt 454 short block. Well I got it in the machine shop currently getting balanced here's what I got so far

454 bored .060 over
7416 GM forged crank
Stock 6.135 rods with arp bolts
Speed pro 30cc dome pistons
Lunati 60204 cam (.574/.572 gross valve lift, 276/284 advertise duration)
Scorpion scp-1001 roller rockers
Cheap ebay stock 4 quart black oil pan
stock carter mechanical fuel pump.
Pioneer Heavy duty flexplate

I'm looking to purchase heads this friday does anyone have any recommendations. I'm stuck on my build. I got all of these parts listed above from just reading different forums on 454 builds. I'm also going to need a carb and intake soon to any recommdations will be greatly appreciated. Right now I have no idea what kind of compression or hp this thing will make. I've been looking on ebay and see cheap heads 119cc and 320cc for $999 but dont want to run a chinese brand unheard of.

Oh yeah I already started tearing down the inside. I just cant take looking at nasty interior

Thanks for looking

First, your HP goal for BBC is silly low. Yes, silly low. You can use just about any head you find with a retro roller cam setup and hit that with a 750-850 carb. If you can swing the do re mi, then these would be my choice for a hot NA street/strip unit : https://www.profilerperformance.com/174-bbc-24-degree-heads.html

After that, just about any aftermarket head is going to get you there with 9-10:1 SCR and a 230ish cam. But the sky, or your pocketbook, is the limit. The only recommendation for a BBC that I view as an absolute necessity is the roller cam. BBC eat FT cams like the fat kid in the candy store.

So are you saying I made a bad choice in cam. I got it for a good deal on ebay brand new with lifters for 200 bucks free shipping. Not to concern about the track this will be a 99.9 street car only time I can see racing if I'm in the country with my Friends having fun if that helps.

Here is my perspective and experience with BBC's - I've never built one, but I've swapped FT cams in two different motors. BBC's ate cams before the oil and gas went to crap. Now a FT cam in BB is a time bomb IMO. Getting 10K out of one is almost a dream.

I was told it has okay as long as I run the proper zinc in the oil. I dont know much as this is my first big block. I do know that I did have a roller cam in my 383. As did the previous owner of this block. Just was trying to make something work good with a budget

I've run hydraulic Flat top lifter camshaft in one of my 454/468 BBC since l rebuilt it in 1993, use it for daily driver for over a year an never missed a heart beat. It's now on its 4th vehicle.

But you need high volume oil pump an a 6 quart oil pan, it needs oil!!! I also run synthetic oil. Well yes heavy zinc oil after fresh rebuild an even 2nd oil change then change to full synthetic.

Know it's limit, if it's not really built keep the RPM below 6500 or it will die.

There are 2 different size push rods, get the bigger ones and guides, sorry can't remember the size off hand.

Profiler heads are good, retro roller cam is better. I got AFR heads on my other 496 BBC now that engine did wipe the flat top cam after a fresh rebuild, reason unknown.

With what you got an say profiler heads, good intake an carb you better be making 450 rwhp an 500 tq plus. They are stump pullers off the line, got to love the tq!!

BBC and budget - not synonymousIMO. But BBC HP and TQ are beyond addicting.

I'm just saying that I won't build anther Gen 1 anything with a FT cam. Perhaps when I was younger I had to for budgetary reasons, but now, I'd rather save the extra $500 and build a roller and have it last. And also grab the free HP that the roller allows without giving up any driveability.

My two cents - that aren't worth much more than $.01 - hehe.

Well im looking at heads and I see 119cc, 115cc, 113cc. And it's just confusing because in being told if I choose the wrong head then my compression will be to high. I just want a good head so I can run regular gas, 91,93 dont want to deal with racing fuel and stuff

It's easier to get hp/tq out of a BBC but parts are much more costly than a SBC.
There is no such thing as a cheap rebuild for a BBC if you want it to last an work.

Well with a plus 30cc piston your already headed for high compression.
