what was the brand of the mechanical pumps and what was the cause of their failure. We ran mechanical gauges in all the circle track cars we built and through all the crashes where front and rear clips were bent no gauge ever failed.
Some were cheap junk gauges and some were better quality gauges. I've had mechanical oil pressure and temp gauges fail, didn't bother to check if the problem was the gauges or the senders, just ripped them out and started fresh. Had a mechanical oil pressure gauge fail on my Monte last year, scared the piss outta me and I have a bad mechanical temp gauge sitting on my run stand right now. Never really bothered with electric gauges until I used them on my 77 Camaro because I wanted keep everything as close to factory as possible as far as wiring and dash. Have to say, didn't think I would but I like the electric gauges more.

As I'll have to build a spot for them, I'll prob go electric either VDO or Autometer..
This is the spot I built for my Regal that eventually will have a center console

Regarding gauges, I'd love to use my mechanical Sport Comps. The only issue I have is punching holes in the firewall to run the large probe for the water temp gauge. I know I can use a grommet, but I cringe at the thought of drilling and cutting my cowl/firewall.

Any ideas you guys?

I will be more specific and add to my post from yesterday. The ideas I am looking for are which (if any) existing holes in firewall have you guys used to run the mechanical gauges through?

That's the problem with mechanical gauges. I think you'll need to drill a hole. The speedo grommet has some room, but is a b!tch to get to on the inside. Did your car have cruise control that's been deleted? That's a decent size one...
