I've been in Buick sales / management since 1975. While I can't document any '79 info, I have a '78 price / ordering book that may help. Standard powertrain in a '78 Regal was the 3.2 litre, 196 cu. inch V6 and floor mounted 3 speed manual trans. Options were 3.8 V6@$40, 4-speed manual trans, code MM4 @$125 and 3 speed automatic, code MX1 @$318. MX1 was required with either version of the 305 V8, 2bbl. or 4bbl. I remember stick shifts thru the '80 model year, but I don't remember any in '81 models. Buick management was pushing their V6 stick combinations through the field sales organization in order to encourage us to order the higher MPG combinations. Many a Buick District Sales or Service manager was issued a loaded up Century Limited or Regal Limited with a stick as his company car, but in the hilly terrain of Pittsburgh sales were almost nil. I can scan the pages for Century and Regal over the weekend and post them if anyone's interested.

I have scoured the local junk yards for years for unusual G body parts especially manual transmission items. In 1991 I found a 78 Regal in a yard in Deptford, NJ with a Buick V6 and a manual transmission. It was black on red with the same high back bucket seats (no console) that were used in the A bodies at the time. I can't recall if it was a 3 or 4 speed or what size Buick V6 it had. But that is the only A body Buick with a factory manual transmission I have ever seen in person.

When I was a kid my dad bought an engine and transmission from a 78 or 79 turbo Regal. The transmission was a T50. The guy he bought it from claimed he special ordered the car but his wife didn't like driving it in the snow so he swapped in a N/A 231 / auto.
I posted about that here on this site many years ago and was told no such thing ever existed.
Take this info for whatever it's worth.

I find it fascinating all the odd ball combos in the late 70's. Having been around Pilot line mid 60's Chevrolets I can say that a lot off odd stuff that was supposed to be destroyed ended up sneaking out so anything is possible.

I am pretty sure there was a 78 4-speed with a 6 cylinder but I don't know how many were made


It is something like .2% so that equals anywhere between 250ish to 350ish

Here's what was available in 78 for Olds. Note the gear ratios for the 5 speed are different than the gear ratios listed in the service manual for some odd reason.
