Ok.

Shops make pretty low points on parts - I saw this with my Dad's shops. As a teenager I always wondered why he had one rate for standard mechanical labour, and another rate for electrical diagnosis/work? I get it now.

Agreed. Elecrical diagnosis/work=labor intensive

We have around a dozen trucks at work that I 'look after'. The shops down here make a good markup on parts. I get it. They are in business to make money.

The places down here that would do cam swaps, turbo installs, tuning look like they make damn good money to me.

Where I could sympathize with the guy in the video was with how they have to deal with the type of crowd you described (Facebook, 6-pack, etc.).

It wouldn't be for me.

The sad thing is that it isn't a no-brainer. In fact, it takes a whole lot of sense and judgement to come to the conclusion that you are either going to:

1. Effectively plan it all out and execute it yourself, and have a real appreciation for what just happened; or
2. Pay someone 4 times as much to do it on your behalf; and part of that cost is to cover the nonsense after the build when sh*t goes wrong (and it will) and the builder has a dude standing in front them tapping their cheque book in disappointment.
And it's not just with cars. It's with EVERYTHING!

I even mentioned to the wife a similar thing about the cost of my current house project of replacing the wood stair rails on our front porch with vinyl railing. The rail kit itself is less than 100 bucks per side easy. But post kits, the vinyl post sleeves, toppers and bolt kits and all the peripherals add up quick. She was whining about the cost of parts alone were north of $700. Then I showed her the parts list with prices. It will nickel and dime you to death. And she's getting free labor (she feeds me though, so there's a win/win). There's more to this crap than I originally thought. But I learned quick as I researched on what all it takes to do this job before I started. It's not difficult, but like any project, car or not, you need to not get in a hurry, test fit, adjust, re-test fit, then finalize the step and then check your work and move to the next. And the more you do it, the seemingly easier it is to gain efficiency.

Yup, not the first one like that. Probably a spammer- the other post was about video games.
