I recently purchased a power chip from Hypertech for my 1984 Oldsmobile Cutlass 3.8 V6 . It says the computer is located behind the kick plate but I can't find it or find any information about it.

Passenger side. Did you check that side? Chip will be inside a metal box behind the kick plate, at least for 8 cylinder cars.
Yes I checked, so did my mechanic , he said he checked under the hood and behind the glovebox as well. He was the one that recommended I try a forum post to get any further information.

That's the only location that I have found them. Unless it was removed prior to your ownership, but that would cause other problems as well.

Your best option is to look under the steering wheel for the diagnostic port. If it has a diagnostic port, it at least had an ECM at one time. If it did have one, it obviously doesn't now. The "check engine" light would remain on at all times if it was removed and the vehicle was not reconfigured to run without it. Get a refund for the chip if possible, or reconfigure the vehicle back to original specs. Personally, I'd go away from the chip.

It's inside the passenger front side kick panel. Take top panel off, and wala.. then you'll see the metal ECM box
