years ago my AC quit, just left it this spring I had it looked at thinking new compressor but they both service valves were leaking. It never ran out of R12.Every summer I would run it to keep it from seizing and it worked, just recharged it and now works like new again. This year I decided to bring the car up to date.Changed Ujoints,Trans flush and fill, cooling flush and fill and new stock fuel pump. Now runs like new again.

I'm not sure if you were asking for help or anything. . . but here is a video on doing A/C repairs if you're interested.

Even when an a/c system is charged and working properly it's a good idea to run it for at least 10 minutes a month to keep the system and seals lubricated.

Just saying even if it stops cooling, run the compressor once in a while so it does not seize
Why not just repair it so it doesn't leak at all.
