Are those screw jacks just temporary if or until you add supporting walls in the basement?

Will that air exchanger add an additional load onto your HVAC system by the temp of the incoming air?

It's not supposed to. The point of it is that it brings in fresh air, exchanges the heat from the inside air, and sends the stale indoor air outside.

No sir, they are permanent. There is only three of them IIRC. One is right next to the wall for the stair so it's not noticeable. Standard practice around here. If I had a massive W beam put in, I could've got away without them, but the budget had to give somewhere. It would've been several thousand dollars for the beam.

Gotcha. Why the jacks instead of just posts?
I think because it makes life easier for the builder when the house is going up. He can crank them up or down to move the laminated beam slightly and keep everything level.

In your situation I don't see it having an impact, but.......

Generally speaking, on the one hand I like the adjustability if you ever notice settling/sag in the long run.

On the other hand I can picture a punk kid messing with them to screw with a house.

Not being familiar with them on a permanent basis, are they locked out somehow?

They are not locked out. No one around to screw with it. Live out in farm country. Usually once the level is set, it doesn't need to be adjusted. But.... If it ever does it can be. Hard to go back and change it to adjustable lolly columns afterwards though.

I figure the mud room door will be used a fair bit?...and I see the trough still has to go on...but you/they might want to consider some snow stop on the roof above that door...

Oh yeah, gutters and a snow bar are definitely going on that roof, the garage and on the back side of the mudroom also where the door goes to the back yard.

Do your best to help global warming with as many high horsepower low fuel mileage vehicles as you can and the snow won't be a problem anymore.

Just another way to solve the problem. Do you like palm trees? They are technically conifer related IIRC....

Wife snapped a pic of the back of the house this morning. Kind of surreal.
