A kid I work with attempted to daily drive his 79 olds. It lasted a month until he got cut off on a slick road and lost it.

In the spirit of antique vehicles, let's talk about 1995 and older cars and trucks only. Who do you know that drives a 25 year old V8 car as a daily driver (or at least 6000 miles per year)? TPI and 5.0 Fords changed the rules in the mid 1980s about how quick a car could be and still be driven every day. I know that tons of new stuff is faster and more drivable, so let's don't discuss that stuff. And I know that the Hot Rod Drag Week is full of so called 'street cars' that are specialty build for that once a year performance, impressive but not daily driven.

Just for discussion sake, answer one or all of the following questions about 25 year old actual street cars. "I have one that 'could be driven daily if I wanted to'." is OK but I'd rather keep it to actual driven often cars. Fuel mileage is of little concern. This is about the will to drive, not fuel efficiency.

1) Who do you know that daily drives a 25 year old V8 (Turbo Buicks and Dodges count too)?
2) For those in the northern half of the US, is the car driven in the winter? Does it have a good heater/defroster? Air conditioner?
3) Wipers? Full interior? Functioning windows? Passes required state inspection?
4) Fuel injected or carbureted? Turbo or nitrous? Old school engine or LS/LT/late Hemi/Modular?
5) Can the car be driven long range at interstate speeds? What transmission and rear gears?
6) Is it able to be driven at any time or if it rains does the owner break out in hives?
7) How fast is the car at the strip? 1/8 or 1/4 mile?
8) Any 7 second 1/8, or 11 second 1/4 mile daily drivers?
9) Any 6 second 1/8, or 10 second 1/4 mile daily drivers? Come on now...……...
10) Any 5 second 1/8, or 8 to 9 second 1/4 mile daily drivers? Seriously, surely somebody knows a person that is that dedicated.

Anyway,

Just a friendly conversation about real (actually driven) cars...………….think about it, you can put a late model turbo engine LS in a 1995 and older car, but that doesn't mean that you will want to drive that old school suspension with aged amenities every day. Does it? Let's hear some stories.

My grandpap still drives his 1994 Lesabre Limited year round. He only clocks maybe 3 or 4k miles a year, but it gets driven just about every day.

1.) In the summer, I daily drive my 1995 F150, rain or shine.
2.) No. Salt is the only reason I don't drive it in the winter. Heat, defrost, A/C fully functional.
3.) Wipers, full interior, functional power windows and locks. Passes inspection and emissions.
4.) 302 Small Block Ford, EFI, bitchez
5.) 70 mph is no problem, and long road trips are where it does best. 5 speed manual and 3.55 gears.
6.) Rain is what the wipers are for.
7.) Never seen a drag strip and never will as long as I own it.

My F150 can be used the same way a new one can, but it is not a new truck and it will remind you of that. It handles like a barge on stilts, it rides like a tractor, it has squeaks and rattles, etc. It is based on a platform that was designed in the late 70s, and that becomes apparent as you drive it.

i'll jump in on this one

1) me, if i could. but i'm in minneapolis. but i drive them from the moment the salt is washed off the roads in the spring till the first snow in the fall.

2) all except the 57 have working heaters and a/c. i drive in temps from 20 to 100, full working climate control is a must.

3) everything is there and works. all have full interiors, if i wanted to drive a go cart, i would drive a go cart. we don't have emission tests or inspections, but all my cars are kept in shape so they can be driven any where , any time, by any one with no worries by me or them.

4) all are carbed except the two running lt1s. one is slated to get an ls motor and another one may get a baby lt1 4.3l.

5) all are driven rain or shine. even the 57 with vacuum operated wipers. 66 has lt1, 4l60e 3.31 gears and 29.5" tires. 78 salon has t50 and 2.56 gears. red 79 is in transition to ls. tan 79 sports a 455, t56, and 3.42 gears. 79 wagon has th350 and 2.41 gears. and lastly, a 79 caballero with a lt1, 4l60e and 3.08 gears.

6) all can be and have been driven long distance. the 57 did 1400 miles on power tour in 2013. the 66 did 1900 miles on power tour in 2017. the tan 79 doubles as my tow rig, big brakes, big torque, did a 1700 mile road trip to Muscle Shoals Al. to tow a car back in three days. except the 57 (needs radiator), none overheat in traffic.

7-10) stock or a little better. not what i'm about. but i would like to try autocross or real street eliminator.

My 2008 CVPI is just slightly updated from the Crown Vics of the 90's. Its still basically a 90's car. Still prefer it over modern cars.

The big problems with modern stuff IMO, are that they are packed with all sorts of nanny gizmos intended to buffer your control of the car. Instead of telling a modern car what to do like with older cars, you ask the car to do something which it thinks over before maybe doing it, screw that. Also I dislike how silent and quiet modern cars are, they lack a audio warning and can sneak up on you.

I drive a 1987 GMC square body every day. I just about have my 80 Regal finished to use as a stand in while I freshen up my GMC engine. I've always built my own old cars to use as my sole driver. With a carbed car, I can fix on side of road instead of getting a tow unless it's catastrophic. I drove a 55 Chevy 4 door for a couple years back in mid 90s and it was all I had.

I guess what I was hoping for in this thread is that someone was driving something that qualified for the 8-10 questions.

1) Me. Every day. Rain, snow, or sunny.. doesn't matter.
2) A/C Compressor needs replaced. Have one ready to go, just waiting for decent weather to install it (and a few other things). Other than that, everything functions just fine.
3) Would if I had state inspections, but it passed MY inspection, which is more stringent than any state government could be. In the past, I've replaced new tires because I didnt like them.
4) Carb. E4ME QJet 4bbl.
5) I wouldn't hesitate to drive it 1,000 miles, one way, right now... then have to drive it another 1,000 to get home. 200-R4, 4 Speed, Stock Peg Leg. I idle at 65mph with a mpg of over 20.
6) Refer to #1
7) Don't know, don't care. For now, anyway. If the 305 ever goes t*ts up, Im dropping in a mildly modified 6.6L 400 Poncho, modifying the 200-R4 to handle it, and putting 3.73 posi in the rear... Then we can talk about the rest of your questions. :)

I bought it to drive, not be a garage trophy.

internet wide you’ll find all kinds of claims about ‘street cars’ being ‘daily driven’ and running 9s. I’d bet my money that well under 1% of these stories are true.

for that matter I’d guess that most 12 second ‘old tech’ cars don’t see more than a couple thousand miles per year. People have multiple cars in their driveway. If you only had one car to drive would it be a 25 year old 400+hp car? How about 500+hp? How about the 25 year old 750hp car that it takes to get in the 9s? Probably (definitely) not. The terms ‘daily driver’ and ‘street car’ shouldn’t be used together as often as they are. Daily driver implies thousands of miles per year in all kinds of weather. Street car implies fast and not necessarily efficient.

Add to that, typically, when you have high horsepower, your reliability tends to go down.

Daily driven cars have a need for high reliability.
