Need Some More Wire Help Updated 4/28

I just know you guys are going to be able to ID these.
Im starting to redo the engine harness on the wagon. Ive got a few wires figured out. Replacing a few back to the bulkhead connector. Starter, HEI, new wires for the gauges and tach.
I know the one 4 wire plug thats fed with a red 12ga is for the AC. I had to put a new end on it due to the original one being melted when I got the car. Easy. But what about these ?

I cant find anything that this would plug into.

I thought this was for something on the wiper motor but thats finished. Plus the single plug is kinda connected to it.

Im thinking this ones for something I dont have installed yet on the AC system.

I also have another issue. The old alternator had the standard 2 wire plug. Easy right ? Nope. The crate motor came with the new style with a 4 wire plug. Is there an easy fix for that ?


I just gave the tube for the starter wires the final coat of semi gloss black before I started typing this. Got new fusible link wire. A new tube of dielectric grease. You all know how much I love to do wiring !!!!
You folks have been able to answer every wiring question Ive had so far ! How about these guys ? Im going to try to get most of this done by Monday.

what are you working on? year? car? original engine size?

These wires are from the factory harness on my 83 Malibu wagon. It had a 355 in it when I bought it. Now its a GM crate 350 with the serpentine set up. The plug in picture 5 has 4 wires. Wouldnt that be for something other than a sender ?

the oil pressure switch also powered the electric choke. pic 6 shows the gray connector for the electric choke. follow it back and it should lead you to the oil pressure connector.
hopefully someone will post a wiring diagram of the circuit. i can't find it on maliburacing.com

Im heading out to the local junk yard in a few minutes. Theres a couple of G bodies there. Maybe I can see where some of this stuff ends.

hopefully someone will post a wiring diagram of the circuit. i can't find it on maliburacing.com


I figured I'd update this thread and give you the latest. I went to a yard that has a few G bodies. I really thought I could figure out a lot of these wires by looking at the one hammered Monte thats left there but a lot of it looks different. Maybe because all the emission wires are still there.
Anyway, I thought I had the alternator/starter figured out. Made new wires from the starter working back like I did with the 81. This time I screwed up. I wasnt paying close enough attention to where things wound up. PAGRUNT gave me some help along the way which I really appreciate.
Tonight I made the wires that go from the starter to the bulkhead connector and to the splice in the alternator harness. Ive got all the wires in the original harnesses taped to a piece of cardboard so I can see how and where they connect with the other plugs. Im assuming some of these wires will not be needed after this is over.

Look closly guys. Maybe you know what some of these do. For guys that dont know its an 83 Malibu wagon.

I now know these wires go to the compressor. I already bought the new plug and pigtails. But what about the one tied in with the butt splice ? Im sure the previous owner did this. Where was it from originally ? Is it really for the high idle solenoid ? Kinds odd that its spliced that way. I'd like to put it where/how it belongs.

I was told that the light green wire on the four wire AC plug is for the high idle. Mine goes into this 5 wire plug that has wires looped into this other plug. Keep in mind that Im redoing all the wires in this plug and getting rid of the soldered repair that I did a while ago.

Im not sure what the round plug goes to but I "think" it had 2 wires that end up at the bulkhead connection. It was getting late so I stpped messing with it for tonight. The single blue wire ? I have no idea.

This shows the splice and the red 12AWG and brown wires going into the alternator plug. Soon to be redone and hooked into the new CS alternator. I also know the black and dark green wires out of the 4 wire plug are for the compressor. Good there but again, that single wire, I cant believe that was for the high idle. Any ideas ?
Down in the corner theres a blue wire that was cut and taped. What the heck would that be for ? It comes out of the 5 wire plug.

You can see it better in this picture. Understand, there is nothing under the hood of my car that some of these wires will plug into. Maybe old emissions stuff ? Maybe the old carb ? I dont even remember what carb was on the motor when I got the car. My buddy bought the motor and old TH350 for a ratrod and he couldnt remember anything about it either.

I think I have all the AC stuff already there. The original 4 wire connector is a little burnt looking. When I got the car the connector was wrapped with about a 1/2" of electrical tape and the side that has all the soldered wires was my repair. I think the connector was resting on the header and the previous owner patched it up that way. After I did the repair the AC worked okay.

What do you guys think ? Can you tell me what does what ? What can be deleted and the car will still run ? Im going to try to work on this mess and get it done in the next few days.
The only wire that goes to the 5 wire plug that feeds the other round plug is the light green one from the AC connector. Is that needed ? Im sure one wire has to be for the electric choke.

I can tell one is black/white striped with the dark blue (in my '86 Chevy wire book list as going to the idle stop solenoid, circuit 248) & light green (circuit 66). Thinking it might have something to do with the fast idle relay (if there is any pink/pink striped wires on it. The round plug is the oil pressure switch plug (warning light) as it has the light blue (circuit 78) feed for the electric choke with a gray plug, tan (circuit 31) is for the light, 1 brown goes to the fuse, the other goes to the fast idle relay (both circuit 250). AS for the burn on the A/C 4 wire plug, it was caused by an overload on the red wire (circuit 2) since that needs a direct protection as earlier generations of the A(G)-bodies had a fusible link but in '78 (that I know of) GM did away with it. You'll need to (& I recommend to all that read this) to either use a link or a 30 amp fuse to protect it from overloads. Even connecting it via a junction block to the main harness is another recommended change.

I'll include pics of the plug from my '86 parts car to show it too melted/burned in the port for the wire.

I see what you mean about the red wire. If that was the initial problem wouldnt the hot wire need to be replaced ? It looks like its slightly discolored near the plug but I dont remember what the other side of the connector looked like. The one that I replaced.
