I changed the starter on my 1986 Cutlass Supreme V8 307 bc I've been having some starting issues. However my original starter only had 2 bolts and the new one has 3. The original starter had the big bolt which goes to the battery but also had 2 other wires (3 in total on this one bolt) that go into the firewall and then the bolt on the right side (Labeled S) had a single wire. I connected them on the new starter exactly the way it looked on the original. The 3rd bolt is labeled R but nothing is connected to it. Did I connect this right? When I turn the key it makes no noise or tries to start except once, the starter sounded faster than normal but I figured it was because it was new. All in line fuses are good. Any help is appreciated

if you have the purple wire going to your S teminal you have it wired correct., the other terminal should be maked I. Is the battery charged? If the battery is charged I would check the battery cable, it doesn't look to be in great shape

That "R" terminal stud is for the resistor wire that older points distributors used. Just ignore it has nothing to do with our cars.

I was thinking of my ford style solenoid, it has the S and I terminals...I for ignition...and I would like to buy another vowel...

Appreciate the help, I can stop worrying about this now. Although I will replace the battery wire as I'm sure it's the original one that came with the car over 30 years ago
