Possibly a low oil pressure sensor location?

Or an exit location pre laid out by the factory connecting rods...

Side? Bottom? In sump or somewhere else?

Dipstick entrance?

Is it reinforced around the hole? I've seen 1987+ SBC oil pans with a hole about halfway up from the sump for a level sensor. If it's reinforced, you can see if it is close to a tapped hole size and fit it with a plug.

Or, add a turbo kit to the engine and use this hole for the turbo oil return line!

So it's on the bottom of the oil pan that's not threaded or reinforced occasionally it does leak. do you think I should plug it? I was going to but I didn't know if it was supposed to remain open like that.

I’d leave it open.

Uhhhh, yeah. If it leaks, plug it. I can't imagine that it doesn't leak all the time if the oil level is correct.
