I changed the glove box in my GP yesterday and was going to change the lock but I thought why not try my key on the "new" lock and it worked. Was that a fluke or do all door keys work in any glove box lock...

Probably worn out. Meaning, it will take any key in that slot and open up...

I thought GM only had 11 key cuts or something until the late 90's.

Key blanks (specifically the slot in them) changed each year. If you look at original GM keys, there is a small letter on it which tells you which style it is.

I had a chat with an old-timer locksmith a few months back when I was fixing the locks on the coupe. He said (if I recall correctly) that they repeated every 4 years. My coupe had 1 door key (which actually would only operate 1 door lock), and 3 decklid keys (decklid swap)...I pulled all the locks out of a donor car sedan thinking I'd change them, but the coupe and sedan door lock cylinders have different shafts where the lever goes on. Long story short, he custom -milled some keys to work with my combination of 81 and 82 cylinders.

So, yep, you got lucky

sorry guys but the key wasn't actually locking it, the latch was stuck and key was just turning the knob, not locking it...

The 4 year thing worked until the official G-body era. Then they CHANGED them every 4 years starting in 1983. Friggin stupid.

Here's the letter coding for the years, ignition key first letter/door and console and-or glovebox key second letter...
