have you checked depth possibly is pushing down to much on cam I always liked the collared dist..
No experience with olds engines but I have ran hyd roller and solid rollers sbc only time I had problem with gear was a bronze. I went back to steel never had an issue again.I would find specks on depth maybe your 2 deep.
specs called for a bronze for my retro CCHR300 1st few start ups and pushed dist out bronze gear showed wear after an hour..replaced with steel and bought a collar for dist never had an issuse again
Hmmmm, I hadn't thought about that. I does seem like the dist. gear sits beyond the crown of the cam gear a bit. I put a brass thrust washer under it last time. I'll have to research the proper setup, I suppose. I'm thinking a shim under the flange.........
Would I pull the distributor up while rocking the rotor back and forth until the least lash is achieved? Then measure the gap under the flange.... I can't imagine it needing much.

No Olds guy here either, but in SBC world you want make sure the dizzy is not bottomed out on the oil pump drive. Unless the dizzy gear has some crazy alignment situation with the cam, then I can't believe you can possibly have it off enough to be an issue.

BUT, bronze distributor gears are wear items - 100%. I've never heard of one lasting long.

My hydraulic roller uses an iron gear. It looks all but new after 3000+ miles

We have 3 roller cams, 2 from Erson and 1 from Straub, all use iron gears and the the wear is minimal. The Straub has alot of miles with it only looking polished.

I know it easy for us to say go for it, not our motor. My understanding is the Comp cores have had iron gears for years. Have you talked to Mark Remmel(Cutlassefi) about this? I will also be also be going roller cam and plan on running my Mallory Breakerless distributor as is. The bronze gear is an insane idea in the first place and should not be necessary.

Is it a Comp core? How old?

Howard’s. The iron distributor gear wears just barely, and I mean barely. The cam not at all. The Caddy MSD distributor uses a 0.500” SBC gear so I could put a $20 gear on it every 5000 miles and it would be cheap enough. I have no intent on doing that.
