I've been doing some research on my rear, 1984 Chevy El Camino. Its a small 10 bolt from the visual inspection with an oval cover. I was trying to figure out what I have so I can decide what I want to do. Anyway as far as I can tell there was only 1 option for a posi traction rear, the G80. When my tech was working on my trans and had the car on the lift I noticed the passengers side rear wheel turning, then stopped and the drivers side started turning. This switching back and forth happened a few times. So I'm pretty sure I have a posi.

So I'm guessing its a G80 in a 1984 El Camino, 305 motor, basic car. Any idea what the gears are. Or if maybe the is not a G80 any maybe something else?

Thanks in advance

If it was a limited slip or posi, they would both spin together. Not one or the other.

Oh I thought limited slip means the tires take turns turning. A stanard rear is when only 1 wheel turns all the time. My research is there is no true Posi in the G body's. Posi and limited slip are use interchangeably. No?

Yes. Posi Traction and Limited Slip are marketing terms which can and have been used interchangeably. There are some people out there that claim "Limited Slip is the proper term for GM vehicles...blah blah." Whatever flips up your skirt. I've always used the term posi myself. I couldn't care less what others think. I can even show you in the GM parts books where it says posi and other places limited slip. BFD.

If you can find G80 on your build sheet or SPID or any other paperwork on your car, then your car came with posi from the factory. It either has it or it doesn't. All G-body rear ends had 10 bolt covers.

If you have the rear in the air and can spin one tire, the opposite tire would turn the opposite direction, indicating an "open" rear end. The posi or L/S you will have both tires turning the same direction if you turn one tire.

If you have a round cover with a clearance pocket formed in on the driver side, it's a 8.5" rear ring gear. If it's got what looks like little "fangs" at the 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock position, it's a 7.5" rear end ring gear. The 8.5" rear end has larger triangle looking blocks at the 5 and 7 o'clock positions. Either could be posi or not.
