Thanks again everybody for all the birthday wishes, it was a pretty damn good one all things considered.

I’ve been dorking around with some fun stuff on the car lately, may as well because the weather here has been sucking the big one. Still continuing to wax the car in small stages, took these two pics when I got the trunk done, I love it when you’re rewarded like this:

I finally broke down and ponied up for a gennie GoPro suction cup mount for my faux-pro SJ4000 action camera.

I’ve had the camera and a knock-off accessory kit for it for 4 years now, but haven’t had much of a chance to put it to use because the car was off the road in bodywork hell for so long.

The camera itself is of decent quality for the price, but the accessory kit left a great deal to be desired. Most notably the suction cup mount. Back when I first got the camera, I tried playing around with it a bit, but got frustrated because the suction cup would fall off any surface after only 3 or 4 minutes. All I can say is I’m damn glad I never attempted to use it on the outside of the car!

Anyways, the side by side comparison pretty much plainly tells the story. Faux-Pro mount on the left, genuine GoPro on the right:

I’ve had the new mount stuck to the side of the car for several days now, and it’s stayed put just as firmly as when I attached it. You know, for those “somewhere in Mexico” 4 wheeled shenanigans a guy might want to document for a forum somewhere.
😉

Lookin to go full Street Outlaws with this shizz right here!

Speaking of GoPro mounts, I also semi-permanently installed one on the backside of the rear view mirror:

It only required trimming the screws a little bit so that they didn’t contact the inside of the windshield, but that’s it. Very low profile and unobtrusive.

You can’t really even tell it’s there from outside the car:

In other news, this little tidbit should make 69hurstolds happy. Remember this nasty tear in the driver’s seat bottom I talked about getting fixed?

Well Monday morning I dropped it off at my favourite local upholstery shop, and by Wednesday morning I had it back already. To say they absolutely crushed it is an understatement! Not only were they able to replace the damaged section, but they also partially rebuilt the bolster underneath to restore the shape and support.

As you can see, I had disassembled the seat as far as possible and took just the bottom section in to them. Might as well save a little bit on labor on the stuff I can do.

Once I had it back in The Skunkworks, I spent an evening reassembling it and bolting it back in the car. It turned out spectacularly in my opinion!

Now it not only looks 100% better, but it also feels so much better too without the added support of the rebuilt bolster. Couldn’t be more pleased with the end result.

That’s pretty much what I’ve been up to lately. This Sunday Mike should be over for one of our garage days, and I think we’re going to tackle replacing the 41 year old AstroRoof weatherstrip seal again. I somehow got the AstroRoof jammed the last time I closed it, so it’s gotta come apart to free it up anyways. Might as well install the new unobtainium NOS seal at the same time now too.

That’s it for now gents, till next time, keep the shiny side up!

D.

They must have replaced the entire side of vinyl?

Indeed they did.
There’s a seam right in the middle bottom that they were able to work from. They replaced it from that seam all the way around the side. They had initially talked about attempting a repair instead of a replacement because they thought the material might be glued to the seat bun, but once I had it disassembled and took it in to them I was able to show them that it’s actually a sewn cover that slips on. Not glued to anything, which is good because neither of us really liked that option.

Once they realized that, there was no issue in just replacing the damaged section and sewing it back together.

I haven't had any issues with the cheapy suction cup mount when racing. But, damn that is a remarkable difference compared to the name brand unit.

Better buy an extra set of rear tires while you are at it. ;)

Those SJ4000 cameras are a great value. I bought three of them the last time I was at the copy mall in Shenzhen China. I’ve never done a side-by-side comparison to a real GoPro but the high definition video from those things is really good! 👍🏻 I think I paid around $30 USD each.

That seat looks great now!

Don't pull on that GoPro mount too hard- you would probably pull out a bump on the sail panel before you pulled it off!
