I am considering going with a classic plate for my Regal so I can pay the one time fee of $35 for registration and be done for life but while I can find the correct blue MI plate for 1986 I also need one that has the correct year tag on it and was wondering if anyone in the aftermarket makes these tags for classic vehicles just so they look correct.

Topic comes up a lot on the HAMB board, seems most states say nix to repop or reconditioned/repainted plates. Michigan might not care, but probably worth looking into

i know mass doesn't want people restoring them either but i'm yet to hear of someone having an issue running one,by the same token,if any plate doesn't photograph well for safety inspections you fail.

The 83' MI plate on my Monte is black and I repainted it but carefully tapped off the letters and numbers since they are reflective white so they do show up well in a picture

In addition to the industry that manufactures repro license plate stickers, there is a small industry that will restore license plates; an individual who did work for me more than 5 years ago would fix any bends, sandblast it, patch undesired holes, and repaint in correct colors. Stickers are your responsibility once the plate comes back.

For those interested, Pennsylvania law doesn't seem to expressly forbid restored license plates

You can about any older Pa plate but from what I understand you'll have to apply for a personal plate with the old plate's number. The state will send you a new issue plate plat you'll just put away. A buddy did that with his blue plate when they were being phased out. I have a yellow plate ready to go if I want to swap out my Pa Zoo plate.
