Just picked up a new charcoal canister, and im trying to figure out how to hook this up correctly. The motor is a Chevy 350 SBC, with a edelbrock AVS2 carburetor. I have 3 ports on the top of the new canister. The two middle ones are labeled Tank, and Purge, and the large port on the left ( 3/8 ) is labeled AIR with a splash cap. I know the fuel line goes to TANK, but how about purge and AIR? I have no EGR, but i do have the PCV system currently connected to the middle PCV port on the carburetor. There seems to be so many different ways people have done this, with all kinds of different canisters, some with 2, 3, 4 or more ports its a bit confusing. Thanks in advance!

Air is abbreviation for air injection reactior pump part of your early emissions systems. Between a 350 swap and an aftermarket carb I'd expect it was deleted from your car, and your shroud routing for the hoses probably isn't of use any longer.

Any way i can still connect it to the tank, and somehow to the carb? trying to vent the gas tank without the use of a vented gas cap. i almost cannot put gas into it its so bad

I'm sure you could rig something up, but, it's going to take some work on your part, including doing research we can't do all of for you. Again, engine swaps and deleted systems come into play.

They make 2 and 3 port canisters, and some have integrated purge solenoids while other canisters don't with the purge solenoid hanging free within the hoses closer to the carb.

The way the canister you say you bought sounds like it is set up to work is you have a vent line to tank that runs to canister port, you've got a line from the A.I.R. pump that runs to canister, and you've got a line that runs from purge solenoid to canister.

Your engine sounds like it's missing the emissions package entirely, and thus, no purge solenoid, no A.I.R. pump, and all the assorted hoses and vacuum lines.

The charcoal canister is supposed to hold vapors trapped until the car is next started, at which point the purge solenoid opens, and the hydrocarbon fumes are fed into the carb to be burned.

So, you'd need to get a purge solenoid in and working, and you could probably rig something up with the A.I.R. port plugged on the canister. As far as whether your carb has an available port on its end to set up a line to a purge solenoid, how you would operate the purge solenoid (electronic vs vacuum actuated), and then run a line off that solenoid to your charcoal canister, that you need to work out for yourself.

Just running a line from tank to canister, then from canister to carb would just vent the fumes into the carb and then out underhood. The solenoid is what contains them.

Your charcoal canister isn't designed to just purify the hydrocarbon and somehow break it down. An improperly operating system actually leads to the filter charcoals saturating with hydrocarbons, stinking, and needing replacement. Added bonus is the filter has a felt/fabric element on top and bottom holding the charcoal in place. You break down that fabric and you suck yummy activated charcoal pellets like fish tank filters have into your carb and engine.

I’m in the same boat . I’m just going to make a vent line with a filter and a one way valve . I’ll put the exit next to the fill tube. This is an easy fix that will work good .

Hmm.. that sounds like something. Can you explain how exactly youre going to do it? Im probably going to do the same thing as you.

Worst case scenario, is i guess i connect the tank line to the canister port labeled tank, and is it purge teed into the PVC hose? (i guess i leave AIR covered with the splash cap). Or, should i connect Purge to ported vaccuum port on the carb. If i smell some gas, idc, i just want to vent the gas tank and be able to actually GET gas.

The line that goes to the canister will work for a vent line . I’m going to cut and reroute it to run up the fill tube . Should be pretty easy to add a one way valve . I’m also going to add a fuel filter to keep most dust and debris out of the tank.
