Okay, went back and took another look at the picture of the kit you posted. Not sure why I thought all four gears were for the pinion shaft but it's been a long day and I can sort of smell that sort of wood smoke scent of a gray brain cell about to self destruct here.

Any bets that the washer kit is listed as a separate part number deliberately; a way to make a little more profit on the sale?

I don't know. Every other set of gears shows a stack of adjusting washers. I am hoping the Richmond stock photo is a mistake. And everyone that sells the Richmond kit shows the same stock photo. :blam:

Broken coil on a 2016 model? The logic of 'they don't make 'em like they used to' in full force here.

So here's the issue. My dad is incredibly cheap when it comes to cars. He shops on price alone and he will buy something he doesn't really want in order to save some money. When he first started looking for a car, he wanted something AWD like a Honda Crosstour or a Subaru Outback, but he didn't want to spend Honda or Subaru money.

He found this and while it wasn't a Subaru, it had good AWD and handled incredibly well for a crossover. It was an IIHS top safety pick and it was better optioned than anything else in its price range and better looking than any of it's competitors, and it was less than a Honda or Outback. The materials quality wasn't as nice, but the fit and finish was still good.

However the long term durability is where it seems to be suffering. The underbody is showing a measurable amount of rust. No holes or anything that is an issue yet, but far more surface rust than what I'm used to seeing on a 6 year old vehicle. The wheels have had issues with corrosion causing leaks around the beads of the tires. It needs a wheel bearing. The interior materials are wearing faster than I would expect. The drivers seat, armrest and steering wheel don't look so great. The flange gaskets in the exhaust system have failed a couple times. It has an electronic parking brake that has had some electrical glitches.

It's unfortunate because otherwise it's not a bad car. It hasn't had any major mechanical issues, it's easy to drive and it's comfortable. Fuel mileage is around 26-27 mpg. The infotainment system is easy to use and has a lot of functionality. I just wish the car was holding up better.

Supercharged111 wins the virtual beer!

I pulled the rear cover off. NO BROKEN PARTS!!! But I see the play in the spider gears is WAY off the charts. When I turn a wheel I can actually see the pinion gears sliding in and out. The side gears look OK but worn. The ring and pinion gears look OK too. And the pinion shaft retainer bolt DID NOT BREAK OFF when I removed it !!!!! I think the gears teeth were riding up on each other and banging back making the scary expensive noises. So I guess I will order a spider gear kit and replace the whole thing. Hopefully that is all it was. View attachment 199020

I tore some up bad on an 88 C1500. I had to use a slide hammer to beat the pin out. Had the truck rocking pretty good on the lift.

Built an adapter cord to plug my welder into a dryer hole.

Proceeded to make a Roadkill-esque exhaust for this F150, it was chopped right at the split with almost no meat.

From here I zapped it into the truck. It was not my best work, I couldn't reach the tops to weld so they got slammed with some kind of putty. After that, we got an exit put on.

Built from a bed full of scraps. Many of the joints were very different sizes, but it's better than nothing.

Sounds like your 2016 really nailed it in the operational life department; 6 years and done. Seems to be a recurring theme with some makes and models of contemporary vehicles. They tend to work great, until they don't. And at 6 years old, when you go to the dealer for parts in the expectation of finding them available and for sale, SURPRISE!! Half of the parts in the book for it have already been obsoleted and discontinued. Don't know how many decent looking cars I have seen come into the dismantlers yard where i pick parts. Major reason is the cost to repair them and the fact that half the stuff needing attention is no longer available and not covered by the aftermarket cause its still too new Go figure.

Personal current best for me was a recent call out for a lower door latch striker plate for the third door on my truck. Parts manager looks it up and tells me it was obsoleted over a decade ago. HUH??

So I guess that the next step here is going to be how much grief are you going to face to yard out the dead coil and stuff in a another? And was this problem peculiar to you or do a lot of the CX's in the breaker's yards coming with that same problem?? Any recall or service notifications posted?? Be nice if the mfgr paid for the new coil cause the old ones came off the shelf defective.

Honestly he would've been much happier if he had just bucked up the money and bought a Crosstour or an Outback. I tried at the time but couldn't convince him. I was hopeful that Mazda's quality might have improved since Ford no longer owned a majority stake in them, but it seems like they still don't have their sh*t together.

Now conversely, my mom drives a 2015 Subaru Outback that she bought new and it has needed repairs as well. Late last year at around 100,000 miles it needed 2 front CV axles, two front ball joints, and two 2 rear wheel bearings. I take this with a grain of salt though, because she is very hard on that car. I'm pretty sure she aims for potholes, so the issue may lie between the seat and the steering wheel. But the body has minimal corrosion, the interior still looks decent and the materials used are very good quality. It is an oil drinker. Since it hit around 65-70k miles, it's been drinking 1-2 quarts between changes and I understand that issue is common.

As for the Mazda, apparently there is a TSB out on the coil springs but no recall. Probably should've looked into that before I tore the interior out but hindsight is 20/20. I guess that means my dad isn't the only one to experience this issue. They appear to have redesigned the coils slightly, so I guess I have to replace both? Probably a matter of time before the other one breaks anyways.

24 hour marinade in Dr. Pepper, then broiled in it at 350*F. 3L of Dr. Pepper reduced to syrup and turned into BBQ sauce. The glazed for 45mins.

Yup, definitely a "While You're There" moment.

And as the basis for a marinade is one use for Dr. Pepper that I have never heard of. Interesting.

Washed the pollen off of the F-150 and filled it with a tank of E15. I've never used E15 before but it's about 20 cents cheaper per gallon and I'm curious to see how much it affects my MPGs.

So straight Dr. Pepper reduced, no other seasonings? Want to try this in the smoker!
