The problem is we do our part in First World countries. Even my 70 will be SEFI and currently has dual cats will a lean tuned Qjet. I am doing it not for just the environment but to afford our heavily taxed fuel. The big problem is the 3rd world, the elephant in the room environmentalists don't want to acknowledge. Most in those countries go around on ancient two stroke bikes or worn out old cars. They can't afford better and can't afford to worry about environmental compliance. Their factories and labour laws are the same. China sacrificed their peoples health by polluting the hell out of their country to become the manufacturing hub of the world. What does it matter what 38 million Canadian's do when Billions literally can't afford to care? Dodge should have done the Hybrid first. Problem is Chrysler got lazy. Dodge's newest engine platform in the current Challenger is the 10+ year old Pentastar. They never even added direct injection, which it was capable of being added and only one update and not across all lines. Only the mild hybrid E Torque in trucks. The Hemi is nearly 20 years old. It doesn't bode well for their truck line either. Crap, I might have to buy a Ford.

Down here we have a government standard, NHTSA FMVSS141. It basically says that we must at least be able to hear them coming.

I kid you not, EV buyers are already complaining about not being able to just turn off their fake engine sounds.

It's just one step further from the fake engine sounds that car makers have been pumping into the cabin for years (if not decades) now. It's not really anything new. Just now they're making the noise outside the vehicle instead of just inside.

That is a very difficult point to reconcile. As you say, they can't afford to care. They're just trying to survive in a lot of cases. What's happening around the world be damned, they're not even worried about next month or next week. They're just trying to get through today and tomorrow. I don't think any of us would really take a different approach either.

But one also has to take into account per capita emissions. China is nearly half of what we are here in North America. India is less than 1/4. And they're argue, with some validity, that they are just trying to reach a similar standard of living as what we have in the west, why should they have to curb their emissions? And the other point is, how much of those emissions from factories in China only exist to support the demand for western consumption?

I certainly don't have a solution. But when asked why we should have to curb our emissions when other developing countries are not, it's because we believe it's the right thing to do (granted, not everyone shares that sentiment) and we can. Our standard of living affords us the luxury to try and make a difference.
