Thanks for the replies and info. I think the car was scrapped, they were going to scrap the motor and trans but my buddy took it on his trailer. I'll check that out.
I'd find some friends that know Engines better haha should be some Chrysler markings all over that, dead giveaway was the round bell housing.

We're also ignoring the fact that thing has been sitting in the elements for 6 years?!

Wow, what a lot of good information is out there, thank you.

Here are some pics of the engine, it doesn't look to me like the Google photos of the LT-1, was it modified? It has aluminum heads. It doesn't look like the water pump is cam driven. Apparently the car was wrecked 6 years ago and my friend saved the engine and transmission just as car was being hauled to the scrap yard. It was crushed, no ECU, no wiring harness.

My present thought is to see if an HEI distributor can be fitted where it used to be on older small blocks? Maybe with a carbureted intake manifold and an older style cam that would have the drive gear? I am not sure what transmission it has. I expected a 4L60e transmission, I don't think that is what is there, and I'm not sure it will fit in the drive tunnel of the El Camino. I couldn't find any electrical connections on the transmission either. Looking for more guidance. Thanks.
Well, crap, it is a Gen 3 Hemi. Thanks for pointing out the obvious, my brain was pointing to LT1. I actually have an older Gen 3 Hemi on an engine stand, should have seen the resemblance. There's not a single Mopar mark on the engine unless it's hidden under something. You guys are the best. I can use this engine, but I'll still look for an affordable GM for the EL Camino.

It was in a garage, and it's free turning.
Beware garage sitting engines.

Mice can crawl in, piss on stuff. And make a mess even if it still 'turns'

Any garage sat engine I pull valve covers and drop the pan before taking a risk on.

GMPP sells or used to sell carbed intake manifolds for LT1s that also allows the use of an HEI distributor instead of the Optispark. However, you still need to keep the gear driven water pump. I don't know the part numbers for the carbed intakes.
