Every 86 and 87 G Body I've looked at had minor to major rust happening on the body just below the upper door hinge. Seems like there is a metal panel joint that is cracked horizontally.
The pic show the detail on white paint - thin slightly jagged rusty line just below hinge, right and left similar.

I've seen similar issue(s) but don't understand the root-cause.. I'm always intrigued by common failures and their causes..

There actually is a joint there. When I removed my doors to do a hinge repair and complete strip and repaint, I got to see what was under there. The hinges are also sealed with seam sealer but water always manages to get in, and gets the both panel seam to rust and crack. I think I have a pic.

That's the top hinge area. Had a bolt break right off and I had to weld one on the old stub to get it out hence the welding splatter. Notice the seam there, that's one of a couple that like to rust away. Had to get a pick and pull all that garbage out.
Actually, lower right of pic is where your crack happens.

One thing is the upper side fender mounting bolt is supposed to be sealed, mine were factory sealed and I reseal ed them when I put my fenders back on. Sadly these cars are riddled with joints and seams that can and will leak. Quite a job to reseal a G body up tight.
