I've had this problem with cars all my life. My car has to have little changes to differentiate it from others: subtle paint treatments on wheels, removal of body trim pieces, maybe add stripes, polish something that was not originally, etc changes not out of the catalog ---basically alterations the average person would miss.
Anyone else suffer from this - not leaving well enough alone?

I can't do stock, I'll end up getting rid of it if I don't change it to my liking.

I'm totally on board.....not one of my vehicles since day 1 of driving have remained stock for long! As you said, either it be an aesthetic touch, performance upgrade, etc. i have to do something to make it mine! Most of my cars have had light upgrades, intakes, exhaust or more. Hell, even my current daily driver mazda 6 has mods done! Don't wanna spend the $$$ on a cold air for it, so i modified the airbox to get more direct airflow to the intake...and it made it louder too yippee!!!

Ed,
That's not a problem at all. It just makes you part of a special group - you're one of us! I've always made those subtle changes, too. Sometimes they weren't so subtle - stuffed a V8 in a Vega back in the 80's.

Almost every car I've had got suspension mods for handling.

I tend to like making mods using factory parts or that look like factory parts,

The first thing I did when I bought a brand new 1988 Chevy C1500 (350/5spd) when they were first introduced was to add SS350 emblems. This was two years before Chevrolet added the SS350 option to those trucks.

I recently added S-10 Xtreme wheels to my El Camino, but I couldn't just bolt them on. I had to paint the centers and modify the center caps.
Here's how they looked stock:

I bought a 1986 c10 a little more than a year ago, I paid a little over 500 bucks for it. Solid frame, floors and body mounts, rusty cab corners and rotted rockers. something like 250k miles. Solid enough to daily drive. Original plane was bone stock and then junk it, first time i've ever said that. Would of been happy if it made it a year. Started with an exhaust and emissions delete, then some bigger tires. Then I stumbled upon a vortec 5.3 and it went all downhill from there or uphill however you see it. Now I have a cammed 5.3/4l60e c10 then still looks like a 500 pickup truck that I drive everyday. So it's still nothing but subtle changes from the outside. It also eats axles and transmissions.

When I got my Regal when I was 15, the plan was to keep the V6, had no idea I had a shitty metric trans, and just let that be. Never even crossed my mind to change the engine until it started giving me problems. Now, +200hp later, I'd say it went swimmingly. :p
