I am considering fiberglass bumpers for my 86' Regal project since I don't want to paint my stock ones which are actually in pretty good shape and I am not sure if I am going to want the chrome on the car, if I go this route I would make reinforcements for both front and rear bumpers just for safety.
I have Goodmark front bumper fillers and ABS rear ones so I am wondering if the fiberglass bumpers have any fitment issues with aftermarket fillers or any other issues as far as fit and finish.
I plan on my car having a somewhat of a T-type look to it with possibly a dark cherry paint and I am looking at the smooth bumpers so I can add a real bumper impact strip to both for at least bump protection.

Ive only seen a couple of fiberglass bumpers but the fitment looked decent. As for prep work it would likely be the same as any fiberglass part, depending on company anything from pinholes in the gelcoat to waves that need to be straightened before paint.

If you run Fiberglass bumpers, you can use the factory Aluminum reinforcements which only weighs about 13 lbs. 87 GN's had steel bumper reinforcements, 86 GN's had Aluminum bumper reinforcements making the '86 GN about 35lbs lighter than the 1987 GN. All T-types had the AL reinforcements.

Using Steel bumpers and 82-84 cut down (2.5 mph) bumper brackets saves over 25 lbs over steel and 11lbs over aluminum bumper brackets.

In front I run the steel bumper and 2.5 mph brackets. The set up is pretty light.

My front bumper on my Regal has the aluminum reinforcement but if I decide to go fiberglass it is not about weight savings it's that I am not big on chrome and I am not sure if they will fit the look I want but they are in very nice shape for originals so I would rather sell them than paint them.

I say buy one of black paintable steel bumpers, since you not concerned about shedding weight.
The problem with that is they are just the outer shell and cost about $100 more than a fiberglass bumper plus I would have to use the inner supports of my chrome bumpers making them less sell able.

I would paint the bumpers you have. It's safer and you know they fit.
