hi,
i'm new to the gbody forum and would like to introduce myself and say hello to everybody.

i have a modified 1986 pontiac grand prix. fellow member 'qdub24' has been helping me and has been great. he advised me to ask the forum about my question.
i need to reach out to someone who has put a 20" rim on the front of one of these cars. i need to know about the proximity of the rim and the tie rod ends. with a 16" rim they are very close. i need to know what happens at 20". do they go over the tie rod end, as i have read or what? i don't care about car body height or tire width/height or lug bolt patterns .... just hypothetically ... if you take a 20" (or another big wheel) and placed it on the lugs what would happen near the tie rod ends and upper control arm. i'll figure out the backspacing myself. i need advice from someone that has seen this stuff themselves and has experience with these big wheels.

thank you to everyone. it is great to be with my new gbody family.

Welcome. Bigger the diameter wheel, the farther away from the tie rod and upper control arm the lip of the rim will be. I have 20s on my 80 Monte but that will make little difference in reference of tie rod and uca on your 86 GP. Just make sure you get correct back spacing to look good. Hard to get a good picture but you should get the idea.

Going from a 16 to a 20 would be a 4" overall increase, which would take you 2" farther away from inner wheel obstructions.

With an 8" wide wheel, you want Zero to about 15mm offset. If you go to 12" brakes, you can go more offset (in Front, only).

Both 245/30 and 255/30 will fit in front with no outer fender mods with the right offset. The inner fender may need a little work if the car is lowered. The 245's will need less work than 255's. 255's will fit in back with no work with zero offset wheels. Any more offset in back will rub the frame. Negative 10-15mm offset in back would be ideal

I have 275/30/20 in the rear with a 1/4" spacer 10" wheel, 245/30/20 in the front 8" wheel.

Thanks UNGN. Yeah I gotcha. Crazy how these cars are the same but different.

hi,
thank you for my replies.

thank you texas82gp for my welcome. what a beautiful red gp.

thank you crucial118. your photos were inspiring. i can see how things are on yours and i'm studying your tire sizes. fantastic. it was just what i needed. i'm attaching a photo of the inside of my front drivers side wheel (sorry for all the surface rust). i run really low. that's why the control arm is so straight. driving height is about 4" under the front crossmember. i'm on a firestone air bag suspension.

thank you ungn. your a true brother. my car is a little bit of both of your cars rolled up into one.
i'm a 1986 grand prix le with a 2+2 nose and a worked 1987 turbo buick drivetrain. yours is beautiful mine is a 'rat' type. everything is primed.

let me give an idea of where i am and where i'm going and what i expect to look like when i get there.
now: (american racing. circa - 1995)
i'm running 255x16 on 8.5" rims with 4.75" backspace and 10.25" section width in the rear and 225x15 on 7" rims with 4" backspace and a 9" section width in the front.
new:
the new rear rim is 22"x9.5" and will have around 4.5" backspace.
and the new front rim is 20"x8.5" with an 'i'm not sure yet' backspace.

i cut out cardbord circles at 22" and 20" and attached them to my tires and took a photo. then i grabed an image of my new rims off ebay and roughly graphic'ed them on my photo. it's crude but exactly correct with 2.5 inch sidewall on the tires.
