I'm in the same boat on doing a DIY carpet kit. I want to do a spare tire "delete" version of the 9 piece kit. Anyone know what type of carpet that's used in the kits?

I have a local automotive upholstery supply and they have stretchy carpet. It works great for covering curves. The backing is sparse. It resembles the factory interior cut pile carpet though instead of the factory trunk mat

You're on the right track. 1/8" fiber board, and speaker carpet. When you make the flat horizontal piece( flap) for the spare tire well, just score the backside of the board with a box cutter blade. The carpet will hold it together. Be sure to make a "tongue" to fold down into the spare tire well to give your "flap" some support.
