Take the safe route with a new tank. Then you do not have to worry about crud getting into your fuel lines and clogging the system. Plus you will not have the worry of a tank that might leak. Especially after sitting so long and not used. Good luck.

Well if you don't mind a possible Haz-Mat incident...

In a well ventilated area with a fan.

Pour in some muratic acid with some assorted nuts and bolts and shake and slosh around the mixture in the tank.

This will generate copius amounts of hydrogen gas and corrosive fumes that will cause upper respiratory and airway damage.

You can get the bolts and nuts out with magnet.

Flush the tank with water then some sort of rust inhibitor to stop the flash rust from setting up.

Wear long sleeves. Have a fan. Wear rubber gloves. A Tyveck suit would be nice. Eye protection for sure. The stuff you have to pour out will be nasty, it will eat the concrete, metal, skin, and your clothes.

I still haven't dropped the tank to see internal condition. Where I'm working on it venting is no issue lol

I totally agree...

Fought that battle and lost.

Even outside, still need a strong fan. The fumes will damage lungs and eyes. It's a really cool process... the fumes mix with the fluid lining in your lungs to makeep hydrochloric acid that melts you from the inside out all the while causing you to drown.

If your gas has ethanol, I can tell you now the inside will be absolutely terrible. Like sunken steel ship that washed up onto a beach terrible..

The only positive about cleaning the stock tank is "Once all the rust comes out at least it will be lighter". (though right behind the rear axle is the last place I'd look for weight savings)

If I remember correctly Spectra was an oem supplier when the cars were being built new.

I've bought some of their tanks, spectra premium brand, and was very happy with the quality. The regal tanks are still made in Canada so no cheap offshore stuff, got it with the filler neck attached, just cranked it up and in and was done. Think it was about $120 all said and done, including free amazon prime shipping.

Just for curiosity's sake, I looked tanks up on Rock Auto. For a 79 Cutlass Salon, $89 for a notchback, $119 for a fastback. I eventually plan on running a fuel cell mounted where the spare tire well was designed, and a steel tube frame behind it.
