Hello guys, currently running stock transmission and stock rear end on my 1987 Monte Carlo SS...I have recently upgraded my motor from the stock to a 350 small block...putting out close to 400 hp....can anyone help me out on which trans and rear end to upgrade to? I drive the car regularly in the summer. Not so much strip/street/race action but I'd like it to be there if I needed it.any advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I went with an 8.5 in rear end from a Grand national. They can get a little expensive but a stock rear I've seen hamdle 500hp . Direct bolt in.

Transmission is up to you but if I were you I would upgrade to a 4 speed while at it. I went with a turbo 350 and 373 rear and I don't necessarily love driving it on the freeway lol

X2. My vote would be G body 8.5 and a built 200-4R overdrive if you want to stay automatic. You could build a 9" rear cost effectively, starting with an aftermarket housing that will bolt right in.

You could also just upgrade the 7.5 at that power level. Put in a 28 spline limited slip differential of your choosing and 28 spline axles and it will be plenty strong for the street.

IF you go to an 8.5 I believe you will need a 1" shorter driveshaft, or the driveshaft from the vehicle with the 8.5

28 splines in the 7.5 / 7.625 came after the G-body in 1988, I say after, in that none of them I have ever scene had the 7.625 or 28 splines in a 7.5 or 7.625 from the factory.

Side note: These were strong enough for LS1 powered Camaro and Firebird

I always thought the 7.625 (NOT the 7.5) that was in the montes started in 84 when the SS came back out and always had 28 spline axles?

The guys in a Monte SS forum say that they have the 7.652 from factory in their SS
