I have the opportunity to grab an 87 CZF 200 4r trans. From everything I've found, it should live behind my mildly built olds 355 (9:1, rv cam) But, I have one question concerning the governor. Should I leave it or swap it out for one that was in the OZ or KZF trans used in the 442's. I've read that the higher shift points take the engine out of it's power band. Wondering if there's any truth to that. I guess the same question would go for the converter.

Thanks!

That stock D5 converter, rated at 2400 rpm should be perfect. I believe they stall just over 2000 rpm behind the 307 HO and what around 2200 rpm for the GN? I would think your 350 would be the same as the GN. Is it the 204/214 generic cam? I believe the CZF shift around 5000 rpm which should be OK.

It's actually olds 455 cam. Got it from supercars. I measured it at 203/213 @.050 (262/272 advertised) as I couldn't find any specs. 402486? I think.

I am pretty sure both Monte SS and 442 came with a 3.73 gear ratio, that is what the govenor matches.

Actually the Monte SS came with 3:42's, and the 442's came with 3:73's. Learned this last year when I was lucky enough to find an '85 442 in the wreckers with the 8.5".

Either way, the governors should be close enough between the two not to make much of a difference. I pulled the matching 200R4 out of the same 442, and it'll shift at 5500 rpm at WOT with the upgraded governor from the TransGo stage II shift kit I installed in it.

Just FWIW.

I believe it is .472 lift 114 LSA if that is the cam I am thinking of. How do you like it? What diff ratio are you running?

I believe 3 SPD SS cars were 3.42, then 3.73 gears when they switched to the 2004R. Last I checked the governor did not come with. The only to increase other than swapping or grinding the governor is installing the green TV limit spring in the kit. If it shifts too high, you can pin the small weight spring with a #8 screw, tapped and lock tightened in. I just did that and ground my regular governor. It keeps the spring from popping out and loosing all forward gears but first. I will soon see if I ground to much off.

I am running 3.42 gears in an 8.5 out of a GN. As far as the Cam goes, Haven't got the motor in yet. It's been a slow process as funds allow. I did get the trans, but I think it's been gone through once before. The pan gasket is rubber and I don't think it's the original TC. It's light blue and the only numbers I could find on it are "L450104" stamped across the fins. Does that mean anything to anyone?

You're absolutely right, my bad. I got the governor and the servo assemblies mixed up in my head. I'm definitely not a transmission guy...
Lol
Good catch.

Just tore the pan off. Pink paint on the valve body, green governor gear, and the governor looks correct. Little leery because the TC didn't look right, but now I'm good. Any one tackle a rebuild by themselves or would I be better off handing it to a pro. Lotsa black in the bottom of the pan and the fluid was redish orange. Since I know nothing of the history of it, I suspect that at least a freshening is in order. Thoughts?
