I will soon be in search of either a Cutlass or Monte Carlo. I've never owned a Gbody before so when checking one out, what areas should I check out? I definitely do not want a rusted out piece of $#!^. Thanks in advance.

Door bottoms along the skin seam. Rocker panels below the doors. Rear wheelwells, especially close to the frame rails. Frame from above to just behind the rear axle. Floorpans (lift the carpet if possible). Rear window frame and between the truck and glass. Below the AC plenum/passenger footwell.

Frame rails....particularly in the rear is where moisture likes to sit and cause rust! If you find a vinyl top car, look very carefully around that as well! I know the there's more, others will chime in I'm sure!

Thank you guys! Hopefully in a couple weeks I can go on the hunt for one! I'm not a fan of vinyl tops, are they a pain to peel off? Should I just avoid vinyl tops all together?

You can scrape off the vinyl, but you have to repair the fastener holes and repaint. If you find a survivor that's been garaged, it may not be too bad. Best choice, however is a hard top.

There is a member on here with a really nice Monte Carlo that he will sell for $3k. Blue with blue interior. Not sure what your budget is.

It would be worth buying one that needs polishing, not repaving....

Especially if you can drive it back home from wherever it is...

limitations? some can paint, others enjoy turning wrenches.

how far are you from "recyclers" with GOOD stock

i was cruising old stomping grounds and happened to stumble upon a guy reassembling a gorgeous freshly painted black gramma fresh Monte.

that fella's nephew brought over an equally sharp shortbox he wanted painted instead(right after his uncle stripped the car down for a "complete" color change including trim)... lucky me!!! i paid the guy what he had into it and everyone was happy.

Personally??? i would use that "blue on blue" posted here as a benchmark while you're shopping. it looks like an ideal candidate for a wheel/tire swap to add your "touch" to it. drive it as is! stock up your parts and pieces one at a time until you're ready for a re-do. that blue on blue one sure is nice...

Good Luck!
