Can a factory tachometer for a Monte Carlo be wired to work with out the proper printed circuit. The reason I ask is I can get a 8000 rpm tach for less money than a 6000 rpm tach with a wire to add a tach to a non tach car. I would rather have a 8000 rpm tach and I want the interior to look factory correct. What do you think?

Is it a v6 or v8 tach. There is a difference.

MSD makes Tach adapters if you are using an MSD box

Should be a simple matter of running the 3 wires to the terminals on the back of the tach. I can look tomorrow at my spare cluster and tach to see how feasible it is.

That is what it looks like to me. I want the interior to look factory. My car came with a clock no tach. The car is a V6 right now but may change down the road. Dixie Depot sells an add on tack for 200 bucks that reads 6000 rpm. They also sell a factory replacement tach that reads 8000 rpm, for 125 bucks. I would rather have the higher reading tach.

Is there a difference in factory tachometer from a V6 to a v8? They don't list out a different part number that I have found. I may run a MSD box later for my timing retard. I am putting my boost gauge and maybe wideband gauge in my bread box, so I can hide them.

V6 and v8 tachs have a different redline on them

Just like any tach they have to be setup for the different amount of cylinders.

I have the different types in my garage I will dig them out to show to you

I know these are different year tachs but you get the basic idea.

You can see that hey all have a different redline on them.

Here's the back of a factory 78-85 tach bracket...you can see the connection locations...one need for the clock in tach.

I think the repop tachs use the newer bracket which has one less connection as there is no clock (at least it looks that way by the ones in the links above)

so I think by connecting wires to the pins on the back of the bracket shouldn't be an issue?
